Fallout New Vegas from Steam Crashes on startup

Well I bought fallout new vegas from the quakecon sales this weekend and I installed it and clicked play from steam and the launch screen came up and then when I click play on that it immediately crashes. I have tried compatibility mode with XP, running as admin, re-installing(about 5 times) and verifying the integrity of the game cache. When I do that it says I am missing a file and it downloads a 0 byte file and says everything is good however it still crashes and when I go back to verify the integrity of the game cache again it says I need a file and downloads a 0 byte file again and doesn't work. Now normally I would just give up and waste 10 bucks but I played this on my old pc for about 50 hours and have the saves and I hate buying a game and never being able to play it. The pc I installed it on is my sig rig. Thanks for the help.

try searches for "windows 7 64bit new vegas" or try reinstalling for the 6th time to an alternate directory(via cut+paste) into something like c:\fallout\newvegas\(paste)

Interesting, I've got an issue where the launcher crashes, but the game is fine.

Since it keeps downloading a 0kb file, the installation must be corrupt, so best I can suggest is redownloading from scratch if you can, or installing from a physical disk if you can get hold of one.

well i have tried re-installing it from scratch and that doesn't work, and the disc is out of the question seeing as how i got it from steam.

you can try reinstalling it like i said, all you have to do after that is find the hkey variable and edit it to the new installation path(use of regedit)

its how i reinstall problematic games with steam

Not sure this will help but thought I'd mention my experience. Ok, had already played through once or twice. Thought I'd play the game after a long absence, as I said had already played through once and finished the game, So Steam had that in "memory", tried to load the game and had the same experience that you did.

Came to find out that the major download/update that came out a month or so ago, did'nt want to work with the files I had in my computer. Once I erased the game and re-downloaded the game, everything was fine. Of course you lose the save games, but what are you gonna do? Steam automatically downloads the update...

Can't be for sure this is your problem, but this is what I experienced and and my solution. May be another fix, thought I'd share my experience...

Good luck

the launcher is indeed retarded. i get the "launcher has stopped working" error over and over, but if i memorize where the play button is and hit it quick enough it will launch. stupid thing.

Have you tried going into your folder and checking the game to make it run as admin? Might help.
