Setting up or possibly renting a dedicated gaming server??

Hi guys, finally ventured into PC gaming full time lol and multiplayer has become a big part of my experience and like many players I'd like to set up my own server.

Now I thought this would be a simple task. Buy a cheap AMD system and **** loads of RAM and job done. But having researched a little more I've discovered a serious pitfall... My internet speed.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/1423850209.png

I read that upload speed is really important and mine is abysmally low. After researching it appears that no ISP here in the UK can really offer me a great service at an affordable price without me asking for a business line. So I thought I'd look into renting a server.

Would this be a good idea? And how much would it cost me? Could anyone recommend a good site at an affordable price?

I'm currently playing minecraft with a few friends and the problems with are server are just unreal. I'd like to venture into a few more games though tbh.

So should I rent a server or is there another option here?

Thanks in advance.

/offtopic: what I'm writing here isn't exactly what you asked, but since your post got me thinking I might as well post something back. I suppose you can only get DSL connections as it's the case in Paris and these do have pretty low upload speed. Mine is capped at 100kBps for example, and it gets worse during peak weekend hours. Recently optic-fiber appeared, but it is quite overpriced for now. Servers for rent afaik are only cloud servers like "amazon cloud" and the prices are ummm... huge they're just not meant for home users. My take: setup a server on your current rig and test it out, maybe it has enough up-bandwidth for you and your friends. If it all goes well you can set it up on your current connection; if it doesn't work, search for fiber offers.

Forgot to mention this! I've had a minecraft server set up for the last week or so running off my main machine and the experience has been fine for my friend but not so much for me. Really laggy and just makes the gaming experience unpleasant. This is what prompted me to search into more reliable server solutions

This site seems quite reasonably priced

you would need to set up a server and also have a second line put it to supply it an internet connection. this would cut down on your lag to it. you need a good upload speed to host any game, the more players the more upload you are going to need. i have a 13meg down 2meg up cable line, depending on how many players are in the server and the game it might have a little lag.

I was hosting a modded cod4 server with custom maps. when it would change maps and a few didn't have the map it would lag the game some because most of the upload was being used to get them the new map.

honestly just rent a server, even ones that dont have massive bandwidth usage should be fine for just a game server.

definately get one with a load of ram though

oops , my bad, didn't look at ops location, was only trying to suggest a good service provider. and the site looks good to me? maybe you are having issues?
regardless..I thought he was US based.. I don't know any UK based gsp's I have heard of multiplay but to be honest, that site looks a mess.. I went to the order page and the prices do not configure properly, so make sure you check if you order something.
I took a look at a minecraft server on the website and when I changed player slots the price would change but when I reverted, it stayed the same.. look for yourself...
