To break it down:

1. Parallel worked fine using Bitspower SLI fittings in my loop.

2. Then it worked terribly using narrower Koolance SLI fittings.

Doesn't make sense to me.
I missed the KL fittings and that is the issue. I used those before in my old rig and switched to BP for good. My flow rate was terrible.

I think you may be having an issue with the block or the card it self. If you are running series and the middle card is the hottest card by such a margin tells me it could be the card or the water block was not installed properly. If you were having flow issues your third card would have similar temp issues but you are clearly not having that. I would try reapplying the water block, but before that change the order of your cards and see what happens.

As I said, I changed the setup to serial and the temps are perfect, so it's not the card or block.

It seems the seekeroffun has narrowed down the answer. I guess the narrowness of the Koolance SLI fittings makes parallel cooling unworkable, at least in Tri-SLI. Not sure why they nonetheless work great in serial, but oh well.

I thought this was an interesting read: http://martinsliquidlab.org/2011/04/...s-vs-parallel/

But overall Serial is obviously the way to keep things unless you just run 2 totally seperate loops instead of a parallel. I doubt it would be cost effective - so the current serial configuration you have is on the money. Best to you for the nice setup

oh crap, I have Koolance VID connectors for my CFX set up right now in parallel, and will be moving up to Tri-Fire very soon. I already ordered another 2 Koolance connectors so I could stay with a parallel configuration, which I assumed would be best since with 4 blocks and three rads. Sounds like I am going to have to experiment a bit now....

Martins link is for parallel pumps ..not CF/SLI please don't confuse people ..parallel works just fine in running GPU's only and nothing else !

He is right, if you know about electronics think about how parellel works then. Say you have a circut that looks like this:

Electricity likes to take the path of least resistance and all of the paths have the same resistance within a margin of error so the curent is the same accross all branches.

Now comapre the first circut to this one:

The middle resistor has more risistance than the other branches so it gets less flow but still some but very little. Now to bring this back to watercooling your second card has more resistance because of the smaller sli connectors so the majority of the water bypasses the 2nd card for the third card. If you installed a bigger connector that is as large or larger than your tubing than the temps will come back down.

Random fact: A lot of electricty concepts and formulas can apply to water.
Head pressure = voltage
Flow rate = current
pump = power source
waterblocks / rads = load devices

so is there such a thing as "high flow" sli connectors? I was able to find dimensions on the bits power ones which are 10mm in diameter, and Koolance ones are indeed more restrictive at 8.5mm. Can not find any measurements on the EK Sli bridge thing, which looks nice but not sure I have the clearance in my case to use. Nothing I have seen has a 13mm diameter though, which I would like if possible.

Well they don't have to be exactly 13mm because i doubt that your barbs or compression fittings inner diamater is exactly 13mm somewhere between 11-13 would be ideal or if there is enough room you cound just use barbs or compression fittings with a short tube to connect.
