Upgrade to IvyBridge?

Thread Starter
Hey all, I'm parting together a new build for the winter - my current rig will be 4yo - and am now looking at CPUs.
A quick search on the next release from Intel shows the IvyBridge, and a bit of research shows that they should be backwards compatible for current LGA1155 socket (especially including that certain mobo manufacturers have begun advertising their current boards as IvyBridge compatible).
So, my plan is to purchase a medium end i5-2500k for now for the build, which will be still amazing in and of itself, then trade that in (sell it back) and purchase a new 'higher end' IvyBridge offering, seeing as they're estimating a minimum 20% performance increase per clock over SandyBridge.

Any insight into the true feasibility of this request?

I'm also deciding between the Intel P67 and Z68 chipsets - I have yet to begin my research on this - but which of these will be better overall, as well as most likely compatible with IvyBridge?
Thanks!

I think they are pretty much the same, Z68 doesnt offer any real advantage. Im waiting for ivy bridge too.

Z68 and P67 perform equally well. Get whichever one is cheaper and has the options you want. If you want/need quicksync or ssd caching then get a Z68 board. Bot are supposed to be IB compatible.

Will it be a "2nd" gen ivy so the current 1155 will be outdated and can't use the new ones?
Intel is pretty good at killing sockets so I don't know if I will be going the same route as the op or not.
Getting a ivy bridge 'ready' motherboard along with 2500k , or cheaper one, and then upgrade.

Will I be shooting myself in the foot and jumping up and down if Intel release yet another socket for "pure" ivy bridge compared to the ones out now that are compatible?

Building a 2nd system and I would be pretty pissed if they go all "intel way" on me..
Meaning I buy a ivy for these boards out now and they release a new 3rd ge.n i3 i5 that can't be used on 1155
