i5 2400 or i5 2500k for my htpc/server??

Hi all i recently decided i wanted a core i5 htpc/server/wifes gaming rig(sims

3,tropico 3). I ended up selling a few things and for the wife and sister i bought

just an i5 2400 and an h61mu-e35 b3 about a week ago. I have until friday or

saturday to return the 2400 and get a 2500k which i know this board wont oc

but atleast that way i could later on once i finish my bedroom and can do a

midtower htpc. Now heres the downsides.

1) Its an hour drive to return and exchange this cpu for another.

2) It will cost 30$

3) I wont be able to take advantage of oc just yet

My usage will be encoding folders with approx 20 or so hour long video clips at

a time as well as sims 3 gaming and a media server with transcoding on the fly

to another pc and a ps3. All inside a silverstone milo ml03b. 24/7 usage.

Possible virtual machines to learn on. Running windows server 2k8 r2.

Also to note no my budget doesnt allow to upgrade the mobo also atm.

I will not have any restocking fees and my questions are

Do you recommend i upgrade the cpu or not?? Mainly i ask because of heat

once oc'd even with the best of coolers thatll fit into this case id imagine itll

be much hotter compared to a midtower.

Which psu ?? 55$ max budget on this will have 2 hdd's maybe 3 eventually.

Which memory so many good deals right now on great memory.

Preferably 4-8gb i can spend around 60$ on this unless going from say cas9 to 7

All of this will be purchased friday once i get paid and get some money from

my sister since shell be using it also to watch movies all day. Keep this in mind

when recommending deals

I'd do the upgrade since it's only $30. I know it's an hour drive, but just do it one day when you're bored

I just recently bought 8GB of DDR3-1333 for ~$44 at Microcenter, so you should be good in the memory department. As for the PSU, I'm not sure.

Easy way to fix that. Every time you start to talk about a new subject, start a new paragraph to break up the text.

i.e Use real grammer.

I would upgrade the CPU to a 2500k. It would offer roughly a 4% increase in encoding speed. Plus you would be able to OC in the future if you wish.

Well, this is just me personally, but I would keep the 2400. I'd undervolt it too. I only overclock gaming machines. But then again, you're rendering stuff...

Meh, keep the i5-2400. It's way too much effort to exchange it for an i5-2500K and given your current system, it's not like there will be any noticeable differences between the i5-2400 or i5-2500K.
