When using a unsecured wifi network with my pc, what is the best way to keep my data secure from prying eyes? Just want to make sure I am being cautious enough and covering myself..... Thanks : )

Slax OS on a flashdrive, and disable your HD while browsing.

or if you want to use windows, turn off file sharing and get a decent firewall and internet security suite.

What he said. Any decent firewall should work. For important information I use TrueCrypt.

Encrypt the data that you think is a security issue with Truecrypt.
If you want to secure your WiFi broadcast, you will need to look up it's IP address, and log in using a blank password (meaning no password), & once in you will need to do a few things, and copy them to a USB drive as you go.

Create a password, the longest your router will allow, like mine allows a multi 63 character password.

Do Not Broadcast your SSID (uncheck the box)
Create a name for your SSID
Do Not allow Ping responding
Enable it's firewall
For WiFi encryption use WAP2 AES
Also set a new and different password for your WiFi connection. (different than your log on password)
Use letters (both small and large case), numbers, and symbols.

Makes sure to copy all of this info to a removable drive, like a USB drive, then you can un plug it to plug into your laptop, for the needed info to automatically connect to this new network

If your using a unsecure wi-fi the only thing you can do is VPN.

VPN or tunnel a proxy through SSH.
