Problem with GTX 580 very weird problem

Thread Starter
So I bought this used 1 month EVGA GTX 580 DS to used with my other ASUS GTX 580. It can run find in SLI mode, but when I just use the ONE EVGA on its own it doesn't even show anything on the screen. The monitor won't sense any input form the EVGA card by itself with the ASUS card taken out.

When I am in SLI mode with the monitor plugged into the EVGA card it is fine. When I pull out the ASUS card and try to use the EVGA card alone it wouldn't show anything but a black screen and the monitor says it senses no input at all.

I have tired everything you can possibly imagine. I tried re installing drivers, unplug and plug everything again and the same results. I can't run the EVGA card alone.

This is so frustrating as I don't think its a hardware issue and afraid that EVGA won't RMA as it works in SLI but not by itself.

Very weird... please help!!!!

What kind of connection are you using (i.e. Dvi or hdmi)? Have you tried all ports/pcie slots?

The EVGA as the master card on SLI works fine...using a VGA to DVI adapter

The ASUS card works fine on its own or in SLI.

because i only have a VGA cable.

But that shouldn't be an issue as in SLI i use the VGA adapter and it works perfectly fine.

I'm not sure about your problem, but you should definitely invest in a dvi cable. It makes a difference.

I refer to the bolded part above: when you took out the Asus card (from the upper slot, x16), did you also move the EVGA card from the lower slot (x8) to the upper slot to test? Or, did the EVGA card remain in the lower slot?

In other words, have you tried the EVGA card alone in upper slot and lower slot? If not, try both slots.

I have only tried the EVGA card in the upper slot alone... never had i had the EVGA card in the lower slot alone. Does it make a difference? I thought in single cad mode you always have to have it in the upper slot alone?

Wow very weird.... EVGA card works on the lower slot at x8 mode, but in the upper slot at x16 mode it doesn't work.

Seems like the card only likes to work in x8 mode (lower slot and SLI)
