6950 idle clocks?

Thread Starter
My 6950 used to have idle clocks at around 500(core)/1200(mem)
BUT I recently just downloaded and installed Sapphire TriXX (I have the Dirt 3 Edition with a BEEFY heatsink).

Anyways after opening the program up my new idle clocks are ridiculously low.
They are 250(core)/150(mem). Im not seeing any difference but is this normal at all?

Im gonna try to overclock in a bit after this question is answered. Thanks

ALSO does anyone know if using CCC for overclocking is better since it still has an idle clock profile even after oc'ing unlike afterburner?

Im pretty sure those idle clocks are normal. Nvidia cards clock as low as 51mhz, so I would assume its the same for amd. Someone please correct me if Im wrong.

With afterburner, even when overclocked, when your card goes idle it will still downclock.

Okay well I want to confirm this with maybe one of the 3 people on this forum who has one. I saw a guy who was taking pictures of my exact video card..

Im just worried that I screwed something up maybe.

Maybe its better it runs at these low clocks though, Im liking this 43C!

AMD power management kicking in, you might see it as low as 200mhz. Its amd's method of cutting unnecessary power to an idle or low usage gpu.

I'v never used Trixx so can't tell you if those downclocks are normal.

Using CCC to OC is very limiting, use Afterburner (or Trixx). Afterburner uses a idle clock profile, my 950MHz @ 1.2v OC drops to 500MHz @ 1.0v when card is idling.

It should be fine. 500/1200 seems pretty high for idle for any card, anyways. I don't know off the top of my head and I'm not on my sig rig right now, but my 6870's and my previous 5870 idled at very low clocks - definitely not as high as 500/1200

Idk why it idled so high tbh either! Not that it mattered though Im loving these new clocks, I guess starting up trixx did something good! I used to idle at like 49C, now its down to 42C with an ambient temperature of 25C!!!

Do you guys think I should review this card? I really love it compared to my CFX'd 5770s (Microstuttering made me what to hit myself).

Cooler temps are ALWAYS welcome, haha. Somehow my 6870's in crossfire are working VERY well. I was so afraid of the microstutter that I hear all about from so many people, but it seems I've gotten lucky and they perform remarkably well

I have a faulty 6950 that I may be able to use in a CrossFire setup...its very tempting to upgrade yet again...

Aside from the microstutter, how well does the 6950 perform compared to your 5770's?

I am so glad to hear you are loving CFX. It was on only a few games such as Assassins Creed Brotherhood and GTA IV where it was poorly coded that I had ridicuously amounts of flickering. The perfomance is approximately 40% better IMO! I love it, I can now run anything maxed out and still get 70+ FPS and that is with MSAA!!!!!
