Will my Antec handle a new build?

Thread Starter
Yes, i've already done the calculations at Xtreme's PSU calculator link

http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

And it looks like I should be ok with my current PSU, Antec Truepower New 550watt.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371020

I however, would like some verification/opinions from peeps who have built more rigs then I have requiring more powerful PSU's for them to make sure I will be safe with reusing my Antec.

At this point, nothing is set in stone as far as my new build specifics, but it will consist of the following roughly:

i5 2500k or i7 2600k. Maybe overclocked, not sure
8 gigs of G.Skill Ram
GTX 570 or 580
1 SATA HDD
1 Optical SATA drive
Various USB devices

Input would be great. I've had good luck with Antec over the years, only had two die on me in the past and both replaced free under warranty with an upgraded model.

You should be fine, whether you use the GTX 570 or 580.

Definitely yes, that TP new 550w is a fantastic quality PSU could handle any single card you through at it, with the exception of a dual gpu card.

For a single 570 or 580 that power supply will work fine. It is rated to provide a continuous 550 watt unlike other cheaper manufacturors which label the peak power rating. If you plan on getting two you would definitely need a more powerful power supply.

Also as a general rule those calculators are complete garbage. This is the only reference tool that should be used. Those calculators come out wrong 90% of the time and 99% of the time they are used or interpreted incorrectly as they often calculate the max load with your GPU, RAM, Fans, Hard Drives, and every thing else connected to the power supply running at 100% which will never happen unless you are trying to which would actually be pointless.

You're perfect. Got a friend using a similar build (i7 2500k and 570) on an antec neo eco 520w continuous, 620peak, and he's fine.

One other questions, what power plugs do these new GTX 570's or 580s require? I POSSIBLY might get a 5970 if the price is right and if I can be convinced it will be better then an nvidia. I assume a GTX 590 would probably be pushing it though? Not that I would spend the money on one....

And yes, I will only be running 1 vid card, I can't justify spending money on two vids cards and PSU to run them as vid card tech changes so fast, its pointless. I will have a Dell U3011 to keep fed but I don't run AA, so a single powerful card will suit my needs

It depends on if you get a special edition or if you get a reference/vanilla card. The reference 570 uses two 6-pin cables while the 580 uses one 8-pin and one 6-pin.

IMO you can run both a 5970 and a 590 on that power supply but it's definitely pushing it. Normally a 600 watt unit is recommended since both of those cards have two GPUs on the PCB. The issue would then come as to if you're overclocking or not and if you're folding. If you're folding on both the GPU and CPU I would suggest against it. If you are not and leaving them at stock clocks you should be fine.

i'm not up to date on my ATI stuff, whatever the ATI equivelent to a GTX 570 or 580 would be, i'm not spending the money for a dual card or dual core setup, nor do I fold and my overclocks are always on stock voltages, GPU and CPU.

Cool, I wasn't sure if the new vid cards needed two 8 pin connections or not as my Antec only has 1 6pin and 1 8pin that can be switched to a 6 pin like it is on my GTX 260
