Overclocking help? **URGENT**

Thread Starter
I just finished trying to OC my 6950 until I soiled myself!

I set the clocks from 800/1250 to 900/1450 while running furmark

THEN my screen started to shutter and go nuts, It was moving left and right and I was trying to exit out of furmark as hard as I could. Anyways I managed to do so but then my screen was sort of shifted half way around.

Basically my start button was in the centre of the screen and so was the time.

Anyways after that scary ordeal what'd I do wrong?? Im scared to touch it again... I think that I just want 6970 clocks.

I fixed it by doing a restart and restarting my PSU just in case too.

ALSO big question to my fellow 6950 Dirt 3 edition owners... is this card unlockable? I read somewhere that this certain non-reference model isnt stable with the 6970 bios.

THANKS!

Whenever I've seen issues like the ones you describe, its normally the screen. Possibly the cables loose or the screens dieing. Did you increase memory clocks?

No it fixed itself after a restart. Im just wondering if its at all normal for this to happen when OC'ing.

I upped the core clock by 100mhz, and the memory by 200mhz.

I tested between stock clocks and maxing it out in CCC (Which is low)
and I only got 2fps boost. Not worth it!

I've had this a couple of times, if you downclock it again back to stock or lower, (than the current clock, not lower than stock) it'll normally solve it self.
This is a sign you've probably bootsted the mem and clocks too high, too quickly.. do small increments and dont forget to up the voltage ever so slighty... I can get 935 / 1525 out of my 6950, but I only do that for benchmarking purposes... I've even hit 1000MHz core/clock then it kinda crashes and the screen was offset (like yours). Reducing the clocks fixed it. and if you are boosting the clocks that high, it probably isnt advisable to furmark them xD

Good to know, Idk I dont feel like touching the voltages, I dont like the heat.

Either way though thats probably what it was. What do you leave your clocks and voltage on??

Also Im not that afraid to overclock, the heatsink thats on my non ref dirt 3 edition 6950 has 5 heatpipes!

Sorry for the late reply, I'm happy with 925 / 1525 on stock voltage. Idle temps of 35-40C, Max Load (Furmark: 8x AA, 1600 x 900, Burn in Test, 1 hour) 89C.
89C with all fans at fairly low speeds (no significant or distracting volume).
But this is pretty extreme and not many games really put this much stress on my GPU xD
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/37kx2/

Edit: Stock Sapphire Cooling. I know 89C is high but its never at that for extended periods of time ^_~

Edit: A true 1GHz Overclock on my HD6950 xD http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/k726u/
Didn't check stability, I just O_O'd, validated my CPU-Z and here I stand xD
