New surround for grandfather

Thread Starter
My grandfather is going in for a very major surgery, and I want to get him a new surround sound system for when he gets home.

The one he has uses wireless back speakers, they play fine when running a DVD through the player.

However, they won't play sound when watching cable, and he wants them to work when watching cable. (Don't ask me why....but yea)

So, are there any systems out there that I can duplicate the front audio to the rear speakers? I'd prefer not to double wire them. (Though I DID think of a dual wire with a flip switch to double pull single throw switch, but it would probably confuse him)

Or one that can simulate surround from a two channel source? The cable box does have an optical audio out, which is what I'm using to feed sound to the system right now.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly welcomed, though I would MUCH prefer to stay under $300, I'll look at anything if it will work for him.

A lot of proper receivers have "7 Channel Stereo" (or 5 channel). Maybe he just needs a proper receiver?

Maybe, but he's got one of those "boxed" systems, the dvd player is the receiver.

I just wish the rear speakers weren't wireless, I could get a nice receiver and use the speakers he has, which he likes.

I forgot to mention, simplicity is the key here. If he has to use more remotes, he's not going to go for it, and getting him to use the universal....yea, didn't go so well.

Some recievers (Like mine, which is an Onkyo TX-NR1008, I'm sure almost all recent Onkyos can do this) can do Stereo duplication to all the speakers. The option is called "All-channel Stereo," and it takes whatever audio is being played through the front 2 channels and plays them through all the speakers except the center one, e.g. 4 speakers (if you have a 5.1) or 6 speakers (if you have a 7.1). On my receiver, its in the menu where you can select like "THX Cinema," "Dolby Digital", "Dolby Prologic", etc, so look for a similar menu that lets you change through audio modes on your receiver, if not, you might want to look for a new receiver

Well, I played with some buttons, found a sound mode called matrix, now the back speakers play all the time, he's happier than a bug in a rug, as he put it.
