Vram Question

Thread Starter
I think I've decided to get a gtx 580 1.5gb evga superclocked but was worried about vram and how newer games might use more vram. My question would be, should I go for the 3gb vram version of the gtx 580? I run a single 1080p monitor and don't plan to go surround for a year (about when keplar comes out, maybe??).

Also, how much vram does crysis 2 use maxed out with high res textures and dx11? What about metro 2033 maxed out, how much does that use?

Just get a 580 or a 570 for now and upgrade as you go along.

According to the NVIDIA time-line, every card on the market is going to be greatly obslete come late this year/early next year. So why spend incredibly more for the 590? Also, the 590 is an SLI card, which you say you hate.

6 GFLOP single core GPUs, which are 3x faster than anything we have now. Though I have my doubts, they usually over-estimate. If the performance jump is indeed that much.. i'd just wait to build a computer unless you need one now, but that's just me.

Get a 580 or wait.

Really? I heard they have horrible micro stutter and they are overall a horrible card to get.
kind of hoping the 7000 series is going to rock some socks, using a 560ti now and wanting to upgrade for BF3 but i may have to wait a while for next gen
if u want a good card for now and to upgrade to major high end for when the next gen comes get a 560ti, runs most things max spec minus crysis 2 with everything max that drops that ball a bit (30fps)

I'm pretty sure he's under the impression that the 590 is a single GPU card, which it is not. He says he hates SLI, but then asks if he should get the 590.

To OP:
590 has 2 GPUs with SLI built-in, you will have to enable SLI to utilize the card fully. The 580/570 is just a single GPU, no SLI required.

Also, let us do a quick comparison.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 - 1.5GB - EVGA Superclocked
vs
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 - 3GB
vs
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 590 - 3GB

If you had to choose one, which would be the best? I meant to say I hate sli/crossfire as in having two cards in my tower.

Edit: Lets also add AMD Radeon HD 6970 - 2GB to that comparison. ^_^

Hands down:
1920x1200 or under - 1.5GB GTX 580
2560x1600 - 3GB GTX 580

You will not have any FPS difference at 1920x1200 or lower if you get the 3GB version. Upgrade to the GTX 680 (rumored to be ~3x faster than the GTX 580) in Q1 2012, or just wait until then if possible.

Personally with the GTX 680s likely coming at Christmas, i'd just get a bandaid until then if you are looking for max performance, especially if you are looking at 3 monitors in a single GPU setup.
