Acrylic GPU Backplate?

Thread Starter
I'm thinking about making my own backplate for my GTX 570s but I am worried about plastic/acrylic would cause overhead on the pcb. Is this true? Or any suggestion if I were to make an acrylic backplate, would I need to put something between the gpu and the acrylic piece?

As acrylic isn't electrically conductive, I wouldn't think you would need to have anything between them. So yes, you should be fine to just sit the acrylic on top of the PCB. If there is anything that creates heat on the back of the card, it may require some heatsinking is there isn't any air movement.

itll still need airflow as well their are mem chips on the back as well ( normaly )

but if u put some standoffs onto the acrylic so it sits off the gpu.. or something? not sure see backplates custom made on back of gpus.. but yeah rember theirs chips on the back as well smile.gif goodluck

Interesting. Thanks for the input. I will be laser cutting a logo on it so I hope that will give enough airflow.

Perhaps a housing shroud like. Standoffs will probably be my other solution.

I would suggest making it out of lexan. Acrylic is heat sensitive. if it gets hot for a period of time {105-110*F} it gets very brittle and will fall apart or crack being stressed. we was routing sign faces out of it but found out this summer it will get brittle, and will brake if stressed. sense we have been doing lexan because it will not get brittle and stays very flexible. i could send you a small peace if you need it for the project to help you out though. just let me know what thickness and size you need.

EDIT: pm me the specs you need.

The 570's do not have memory chips on the back, at least not the reference PCB. The EK backplate's built in standoffs are only a few mm tall, just enough to keep the backplate from touching the solder joints. Also, all of the backplates have an opening behind the GPU socket, I'm assuming for heat dissipation.
