This x100

For roughly the same price you can get AKG K 701s with a Logitech desk mic or a Zalman clip-on mic (whichever you prefer) which will be loads better than those overpriced A40s. And if you can't afford the AKG K 701s then get the AD700s, the directional sound they provide is still amazing while being very light and comfortable and still having great audio quality.

LOL, no way can you get a set of AKG K701's and a MixAmp for the same price as an A40 + MixAmp combo, at least in America. The A40 + MixAmp combo is $250. The MixAmp by itself is $130. The K701 is $266 on Amazon, and that's the cheapest I could find them.

I think the OP's best bet is probably the AD700 + Zalman clip-on mic + MixAmp. It'll be cheaper than the A40 + MixAmp combo and sound a lot better.

It does. You'll find almost all reviews on "gaming headsets" will be from gaming websites, not noteworthy audio sources. As long as it's comfortable and produces sound, it'll get a good review. Same for Logitech speakers. For its price, the Astro has horrible audio quality. You have to factor in the huge advertisement campaign that jacks up its price.

The AKG 701/2 needs strong amp to be driven right so they will sound right. Running them unamp would be silly. No the A40 mix amp cant drive them either. The user would have to Either pair it with a E9 or a Matrix M amp.

I had the HD555s and the Zalman Mic, the mic was awful because I was always told I was muffled. I have the A40s now. They are pretty good just as comfortable as the HD555s. Most people will say get some better quality cans but they are fantastic for gaming. Probably not the best for anything else, but I like having a good working mic now.

Just my 2 cents.

Astro A40's are horrible. I bought a the 2011 wireless edition because of all the hype from other console users. They lack mid and treble and have a overwhelming amount of bass. While I'm no bass hater when it comes to competitive gaming bass does not matter it's about the clarity. This is why I sold that piece of junk and got a pair of Senheisser PC360s with the A40 mixamp. So much more clear, in terms of bass the astros are in a different league to them but if your playing fps this headset has a better sense of audio spacing. One main drawback of the PC360s is they leak a lot of audio so if your using mumble etc you have to tweak your settings quite a bit.

As far as price goes A40 wireless system will set you back a cool $330 excl delivery since you pretty much have to get the chat cable for ps3/pc and the lithium ion rechargable battery.
IMHO they are the most overpriced gaming headset around you are paying more for the "MLG" branding then anything else.
