GameFly Announces PC Digital Download Service

GameFly announced today a new PC game digital download service via a freely downloadable client. You’ll be able to play the PC games this way, at no additional charge, until you end your GameFly subscription. So this is what GameFly’s purchase of Direct2Drive has bought us.

GameFly co-founder Sean Spector told USA Today:

“It’s kind of like a Spotify or Rhapsody or a Napster. You have access to the content as long as you are a subscriber but when you are no longer a member, the content then disappears.â€

Joystiq tells us that GameFly has no plans to offer a digital download only option.

Access to the service is via a closed beta, which will launch September 8. Sign ups for the closed beta are here. Also on that page is a teaser trailer which you should check out.

There will be around 100 games available for download to start, with Mac support appearing sometime later.

It has a little more info. Also i don't think it's 10 dollars because they said in the original posters article that it's bundled with the console rental agreement and someone said it's 12.99 a month for 1 game a month.Essentially you pay for the rental of console games and the get the pc client which is like "Spotify or Rhapsody or a Napster" for a month which is included in the price for free. It's still a little fuzzy as to how many games you may be able to download on pc at a time but they may or may not choose to allow you to download as many pc titles as your poor little hard drive can handle or just limit it to 1 or 2 titles at a time.I think when they say unlimited pc play they mean you can play any game you choose for as long and as much as you want so long you continue to pay monthly for the service.

I'll probably try it out at launch at least for a month to see what it's like.It has to be better than paying 50/60 dollars for a game i played for a week and regret ever buying.

If that's the case, this thread is a massive failure.

I don't think they would make us pay 49.99 for Assassin's Creed Brotherhood for pc and then charge an additional fee just to play it every month. It would kind of defeat the purpose of using that service i would think.I could just buy it on d2d if that were the case and they would still get the money for it.

IDK, I think I would still prefer to own my games.

This is an amazing idea. It may seem like te developers would be aking a hit to their bottom line with this, but if you think about it, they'd probably make a lot more than they do now with piracy as crazy as it is.

I dont like to admit it, but i, as im sure many of you, pirate a good amount of my games. Simply because i dont have the cash to be spending 60 dollars on a game i might end up hating. But this service, however, would be something id be willing to sign up for 100%. even if it were as much as $19.99, i'd have peace of mind knowing i wasnt being a douchebag to devs, and id be able to play all the games i want, and test out some others that may have slipped by.

For me personally, I'd rather do this simply because I'm not always buying new games - I'm pretty picky about what I lay down cash for.

$10/month for a couple games I'll play, along with a billion and one that I won't?

As tempting as that sounds...
How are they going to combat hackers using this service? Having to pay $50 every time you get banned prevents people from coming back. If you only have to pay $10 on a new account they'll just keep coming back even more.

If this is as good as it sounds and works out to be like Spotify, count me in! I will absolutely throw down money for this. Is it identical in quality as installing a regular game??
