Well, it's always good to start with the basics of HTML/CSS, you'll almost always need it unless you're a pure backend database programmer. I don't really recommend books for HTML/CSS. Online resources are more up to date with current practices and browser compatibility. Go through the w3schools for HTML/CSS.

For PHP, here's a couple books :

I got books from probably 5-10years ago, think there any good? Or paper weights?

What I am looking to do is create a nice looking site for my online resume, which will display my work in both a viewable/downloadable manner for both pictures and video. And will have a nice format for my resume and the site as a whole. In my mind simple stuff I guess. (take a look and let me know what you think) ArchitectureByJM.com

I wouldnt mind having a web site that looked like this thought. http://www.kondylis.com/

The site is a template my friend made or ripped from somewhere and I basically filled in the blanks and tried to add stuff but fell short and actually got a job so I stopped.

Then branch out to more detailed coding of databases, forum intergrating with site, etc.. This would be to eventually help a friend with the site portion of his Wine Networking Site/ Future Company..

Paper Weights, don't waste your time with old material as things change after 10years, your best bet is going with newer material so you can be up to date with current software, and so you run into less problems

HTML/CSS is a must to know. Like mentioned W3Schools is excellent resource, also http://tizag.com/ is amazing.

Also some helpful "cheat sheets" found here, http://www.addedbytes.com/cheat-sheets/css-cheat-sheet/ (that one is the CSS cheat sheet, more listed on the right).

I'm not really sure what books there are to suggest, if you just get some good CSS/Html/PHP books that would be a good start.

PHP/.NET are probably the 2 most used server side scripting languages. PHP has a ton of resources and probably the most used. Basically if you want anything dynamic on a website, it will need to be done with either a server side scripting technology such as those to, or it could be done with Javascript for client-side scripting. There are a lot more languages to use, but these are probably the easiest/most useful for beginners.

Ya I'm not sure what books to recommend, they won't be up to date for very long. Best to just look for tutorials on the web I suppose.

You can do a crap ton with just CSS, but if you get into web applications, then you would want to start on something like MS Visual Studio, which will have several languages and platforms. Currently I am learning ASP.NET for web applications (which really I am mostly using C# with ASP.NET). Web applications will use a combination of things to do different functions.

Oh, and Murdoch books are great. I have several I use for reference (since I am a hands on user ... )

Wait until 2014 when microsoft retires IE6. I can't tell you how many man hours I have wasted fighting that damn thing. And 7 also.

I HATE html and the way the web works today. It's too damn hard to do the simplest of things. Right now I am really looking at smartgwt http://www.smartclient.com/smartgwt/showcase/ which is almost too good to be true

I would never want to be stuck with ASP/MSSQL as you're talking all windows servers which is just toooooo expensive when you can run linux with apache/java/postgres or apache/php/postgres. Free is always better. I'll refrain from bashing .NET further as I'm bound to deeply offend quite a few.

Not sure what others think about it, but Ruby on Rails is really fun and allows you to create web applications rapidly and with ease.
