Simple home server

Hello

I need your help

I'll first write what I wanted to do and then you tell me how can I improve that

My old AthlonXP 2500+ is getting old and after 7 years of running 24/7 it is time to move on. (probably worst thing about it is only 512MB ram, anyway it is slow and new computer is already on the way)

New server parts
- Intel i3 T2100T for low power consumption
- Gigabyte GA-H67N-USB3-B3 one of rare mini ITX boards I could find here
- 2GB ram (had it already and will upgrade if needed)
- Chieftec BT-02B (it has internal 180W psu)
- Intel CT Desktop as second NIC
- Seagate 120GB as system drive (had this already)
- WD 2TB green drive as storage

So I was thinking of using this server for
- DHCP server
- file server
- backup server
- print server
- seed box (webui. until now I used rdp for that)
- one virtual machine (I'll go in detail later)
- bandwidth control and blocking certain sites and stuff

Onboard NIC will be connected to adsl modem and Intel NIC will be connected on 8port switch and another 8port switch (this one is not on the same floor so no point of using straight 16port switch) will be connected to this one. There will be 8 computers connected to this network.

Since I can get free Windows server 2008 r2 from msdnaa I was thinking of using this as operating system.

- DHCP server is not hard to set up in ws2008r2
- Backup will be done using simple solution with robocopy and scheduled task. No need for full drive images just essential folders will be copied over to server.
- Just some shared folders would do for file sharing or do I need more sophisticated method

Now about that virtual machine. It would be for my father. Up until now he had two computer one for work and one for surfing on net (connected on kvm). That is because he want to have separated systems for security reasons (viruses).
I was trying VirtualBox Headless over network (host machine my sig rig) but there was serious mouse lag so this was not good. Other idea was to give him separate account in ws2008r2 with restricted access so he cant break anything and he could RDP to that. Your input what would be better? Third option?

And last thing about that bandwidth control. I want to setup so services like youtube and internet radio has only 200kB/s in total so it does not block normal internet usage. And I want to block pages like apps.facebook.com.

All help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for reading all this

use 4GB so the virtual machine runs alot better.

although if you are using 2008 server you could use Remote desk and just make him log in via Remote desktop connection like you basically said. though for security you could just run a Virtual win XP machine for example so even if he DOES infect it, you can just reimage it.

Also about your hardware specs, go with Raid 1 at least so you have redundancy though personally i would go with a mATX or ATX board so you can expand in future if you need more space/more ram etc

Ah yes 2GB will probably be to low for virtual machine. I'll check how it works with 2GB and then buy more if needed.

What about bandwidth control is there any good program for that?

I don't know if Windows Server 2008R2 has built in bandwidth control.

I know people have been building their own router/firewall with pfsense or untangle to handle these things.

Also for your father's two PC needs, you can always put two VMs on his PC and he won't need to Remote to the server, just select which VM he needs to use during boot (work vs personnel)

Thanks for answers.

If I want to go with pfsense or untangle that would mean I have to run whole box on some hypervisor. How much resources do I loose this way?

Note that pfSense has a much much smaller footprint that Untangle.

Neither should take up too much resources,

pfsense can run on atom + 1GB RAM, you'd only need to increase hardware depending on how much you want it to do
http://www.pfsense.org/index.php?opt...d=45&Itemid=48

Untangle needs a little more hard drive space,

Thank you for your help.

I found out I can use Squid proxy with delays in PfSense to have some bandwidth control over domains that I want (youtube, ...)
