Project Build: Rate it and help! HELP PLEASE

Thread Starter
In my school and program, we are obliged to preform a large project over the course of two years. This project must be big, and needs to be personal to you. In my case, I've chosen to build another PC due to my profound interest in technology. This is a somewhat a budget build, and is to find a "bang for the buck". The purpose is for the PC is a computer that will browse the web, word, PowerPoint, movies, music (i,e iTunes).

It needs to have:
ATX form factor
Expandability (z68 socket for future upgrades)

I'm not sure of the cpu, or the psu. Should i go with a core i5 (for longevity) or a core i3 (for budget).

Current specs
Cpu: Core i5 2400

Ram: G.Skill Eco ddr3 1600 Cas 7 1.35v

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V LE

PSU: Corsair CX500V2

Case: Antec One-Hundred

Hard Drive: Samsung F3 1tb (is this reliable?)

That's it so far? Any views?

REVISED LIST AFTER RECCOMENDATIONS AND REVIEWING PERSONAL NEEDS OF PC

Cpu: Core i3-2105

Ram: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-4GBXM

Asus dvd drive

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V LE

PSU: Corsair CX430V2

Case: Antec One-Hundred

Hard Drive: Western Digital Eco green 1tb

About to order. Thoughts?

I need a reliable 500gb HDD. relable is key. Speed is not that much of a concern. Help?

samsung f3 is a nice drive, thats fine,

are you not putting a graphics card in there? with a 2400 you wont be able to overclock so instead of a z68 mobo you can just get a h67 .... still has the onboard graphics

if you do want to overclock youd need a p67 or z68, but the p doesnt have onboard graphics

psu looks fine, even a 400watt would do
so does the motherboard and ram really, how much ram are you getting

edit: by the way it's not "z68 socket" afaik.. its 1156...so anything that fits in a z68 will fit in a h67 or p67

If those you described will be the only tasks it will perform over the years, you can go much more down on the system cost. i.e. the i3-2100, slower RAM, less disk space, smaller PSU. To bring the cost even more down, you could go with a AM3 setup, but i don't think you are interested in this since we're on the Intel forums
If performance/buck is a thing that interests you with this setup, then i think it is really good.

for performance / price you cant beat a 2500k though, the problem is he isnt getting a graphics card by the looks of things, so he'd surely be fine with an i3?

Sorry, i was in a rush and forgot to add the extra details. I'm not doing any overclocking (that's what the main rig is for)

I went for a z68 chipset since its newer (not really many h67 atx boards), and i have the option to switch between discrete and internal.

I was thinking of that too, but in case it gets more tasks, or new os's in the future, etc. I just want it too work, for a long time I figured the extra 2 cores will help it in the future. I may go for the i3 though, not sure yet.

ON SECOND THOUGHT: I'm going to go with a i3 to save costs. I'm just too cheap

2500K if it will be OCed, i think OP would know that.
but i understand you here mate. the i3 will be powerfull enough for Office tasks and gaming. I just said the i5 if encoding/decoding/image/video editing would be made. If someone want to game on that rig Roksonixx is totally right, you'll need a GPU in that.

Edit: Socket is LGA1155, 1156 was to previous gen i3/5/7.

But since it's newer it will carry a premium . If you can find a h67 for cheaper then i'd still go with that one since you aren't overclocking,

if you're worried about future OS upgrades then dont be, windows 7 runs on netbooks fine, an i3 will probably do you until windows 10 or something

I dont know if others agree but i think you could skimp on the psu slightly more, with no graphics and only a processor to really worry about (that isnt overclocked) that thing wont even pull 200watts fully loaded,

An i3-2100 in a H67/Z68 setup, with no GPU, will pull no more than 100W form the wall. Even 100W may still be quite high and not realistic

Thanks for all the replies guys. Appreciate it so far

I meant that there aren't many "good" atx h67 boards that seem reliable and look nice. (i may be wrong)
