He was referencing tablets. There were tablets that functioned exactly the same as the slate. A tablet PDA, a tablet Phone, although typically smaller, served the exact same function as a slate.
These screens, given apples track record, produced significantly better colour accuracy in contrast to the IPS inside the iPhone. Frankly, when you look at your screen, you are no more then 10 degrees off to either side. The purpose of the monitor is to produce colours and eligible information. The PDAs, phones, all which were tablets, were offered well before the iPhone with a much higher degree of quality. If you are trying to view your phone at a 50 degree angle...um....
There were "slates", like the one I made reference to the employee at Nutrience, where the screen was completely removable from the base, and mimic what he would call a "true-slate". These still offered more.
