2x 6950's or a single GTX 580 - Page 8

I currently have 6950 2gb Ref crossfired with complete 6970 bio flash and I used to have gtx 580 lightning before.

bout 6950CF flashed to 6970bios

PRO

1. They're a lot faster than single gtx 580.
2. It really helps my 2560 x 1600 resolutions gaming (2gb really helps) even though I don't use over 1.5gb, but pretty close.
3. 2x 6950 for price of gtx 580.
4. Better than single 6990 from my experience.

CON:

1. Ref 6950CF Produce a lot more heats compared to single gtx 580.
2. Ref 6950CF is louder than most of gtx 580 (I am sure non-reference might be ok)
3. Card of length

Well why buy a Lightning, when there are GTX 580's for mUch mUch cheaper?

IF you can get that set up for less than $409.99? Please post the link, that's a great deal if true.

Prices are dropping all the time on the GTX 580 1.5GB now, within $40 of the AMD 6970 and the 580 is faster.

I always prefer a faster single GPU over two relatively slower GPUs.

+1 to GTX 580

Why? Its simple .... try to sell two cards compared to selling just one card. I ran into the same issue with my CF 6870s. It was very hard to sell them together so in the end I had to find two separate buyers and lower my price. I then went to buy a GTX 580. Believe it or not... I don't care what reviews says.... for some reason maybe it was just my system or drivers issues whatever ... I wasn't able to play Crysis 2 on Ultra/DX11/Texture with my CF 6870s, but with one GTX 580 I am enjoying the game at a constant 50 fps. Before I was just lagging/shuttering with my CF 6870s I had to play in one settings down.

Down the road I have a easier choice to just get rid of one card and go with the new stuff...or simply get a discounted GTX 580 to go SLI and simply keep up with the new Kepler top of the line card. Just like how SLI GTX 480 can keep up with one GTX 590. I am sure in the future SLI GTX 580 can keep up with the top dog of the Kepler series too.

Also my usual computer supplier told me ... they are 'expecting' the shipment of kepler cards in Feb 2012 earliest. So that means it will be for sure delayed past Feb. So up to you wait for another 8 mths or so...or just grab what you need now.
Why spend more on a 580? For 8 months you play on High at >60 frames with CF 6870. When Kepler comes outs you play EVERYTHING on very high for at least 2 years. Patience is key, IMO. Run Kepler in SLI and be good for 3 years, maybe even 4.

haha because for some reason I couldn't play it on ULTRA on crysis 2... but then I tried i out with a 580 and it works fine... don't know why but maybe its drivers issues with CF that I been reading about. Oh well it works out fine... plus I bought the GTX 580 for only $400 used though...

3 6950s will probably out rank 3 580s considering 3 6970s destroy it. grab the 6950s and xfire with your 6970.

Playing at 1920X1080 either card is overkill. A 580 with 1.5GB of VRAM was never worth the cash. Better to go with whatever is cheapest when just considering the resolution. As such the 69XX series or a 560 ti or 570. Problem is, I would still take a 69XX for the added VRAM any day over the meager VRAM on the reference NVidia cards. They have since fixed that problem, but it's at a price premium.

The 3GB 580 is the best GPU around for a single GPU card hands down. The 1.5GB version wasn't worth the PCB it was placed on (my opinion). If the 3GB had been available when I was shopping I likely would've went with it. If the OP really wants something inexpensive and the best price to performance ratio, he's looking at 6870's or 470/80's. The 5XX series just isn't worth it.

It's not for "some reason." It's been clearly explained here and on dozens of other sites. AMD blew it with their drivers for Crysis 2. Couple a poor driver plus the fact that the 5XX series has a superior tessellation performance over the 6XXX series and you have a problem. That's a case by case basis though. AMD wins as often as it loses. NVidia loses as often as it wins.

Not really. You didn't specify whether you were talking about the 1.5GB versions or the 3Gb versions of the 580's and you also failed to mention the resolution. The 3GB 580's will win, even with poorer scaling than AMD, nearly every time. The reason AMD 6970's and 50's walked all over the original 580's was a VRAM limitation not a horsepower limit. NVidia has since corrected that. However AMD does have incredible scaling this generation and 3 6950/70's will perform close to Tri-SLI 580's IIRC.

Yup i knew...but i couldnt wait for AMD to release the correct drivers so I just sold the 6870s when opportunity arises and just jumped on a GTX 580. Don't mind it ... performance is excellent, and honestly don't see a difference in other games...guess the difference in 5-10 fps isn't that big in most games when you are gaming above 60fps already... just going from 30s (CF 6870s) to 45-55+ (580) fps in crysis 2 was what i really wanted .... less heat and noise too haha
