No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

I'm posting on behalf of a friend, I'm new to this forum and couldn't find the support section and with the laptop being intel I thought i'd post here smile.gif


I Currently use an Acer Aspire Laptop of model 8390G with windows vista OS.
My laptop fell from its laptop case and the next time i turned it on an error message came up;

For Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCIE Ethernet Controller v1.0.0.10 (2008/06/17)

Check Cable connection!
PXE-Mof: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.

Im unsure of what to do, a friend told me that i may need to reinstall an operating system and i may save all data
Is there any way of preventing this?

Is there a quick fix?

Make the HDD top of the boot list in bios.

Open the back cover that protects the hdd and reseat the hard drive firmly and reboot.

Thanks for the replies, I've tried taking out and remounting the HDD but it doesn't seem to of fixed it. Is there anything else I could give a try before I take it to a specialist?

Do you have access to a desktop? If so, install it and see if you can access it that way. If so run HDTune for errors to make sure hdd is ok. If disk is ok then it's possible a connection came loose to the mobo.

Yeah get into the CMOS and go back to your default values, try rebooting.

If that doesn't work check to see if you have AHCI/IDE/RAID options for the drive - get back to me.

Verify that the Hard Drive is recognized in the BIOS.

If it is recognized, doubtful, then check the boot order and settings. A drop isn't going to magically change the BIOS user settings... EVER.

If it isn't recognized, most probable, then the hard drive is dead. Replace the drive and install a new OS.
