Look over my First Build

Thread Starter
Whats up OC'ers. My first swing at a custom build.

After a lot of research i've ended up with this. Plan to upgrade to 2 6950's or 1 6990 soon. But this is where my budgets at currently. It will eventually turn into a showpiece and i already know the 2600k is more than i really need. But for future upgrades its necessary.

I don't need a case since it will be built into a custom desk I'm building.

https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/M...px?ID=16730352

Quick questions are.

Am i gaining from buying the higher end ram?

I may go with a different motherboard to keep the black an blue theme.

Would i gain from a better HD?

I forgot to add in an SSD for at least my OS if not more.

I noticed that it says that sound card is only compatible with XP and Vista. I find it hard to believe its not able to use windows 7...

And i planned to do a custom water cooling. So i'll head to that part of the forum after i complete this part.

Thanks for any comments/advice in advanced

First things first, what is the native resolution of your display ? If it's anything below 1080p then the GPU configuration is indeed wasted potential. You could be better with a GTX 560 Ti. If you want future proof then a 6870x2 is quite a nice configuration given it's price point. And link doesn't work. Buying higher end ram really depends. Look for tight timings and a 1600 MHz is the optimum frequency, at least benchmark related. SSD is not for me to decide.

Good luck with your build.

you gotta take a screenshot maybe of your wishlist with printscreen, then upload it with imageshack so we can see it

cant see list either.

SSD will speed up for PC if you install windows on it so if you can afford a 40GB SSD within your budget you will see a difference,

I agree with the graphics card thing as said by cpo, if your not gaming at 1920x1200 then best with a 560 ti or 6950. with 6950 you have advantage of unlocking it and getting even more performance from it.

With reference you have more chance to unlock I believe but I'm not sure on that one as I have seen Twin Frozr 3 versions of it unlock at a higher rate (?).

And please refer me as Luxio instead.

I've just seen your build and I must say a lot of money is spent "hazardously". The RAM sticks are way to pricy and deliver a minus ratio performance compared to the smaller 1600 MHz frequency. I7 2600k is only a must if you'll benefit from heavy multitasking and hyperthreading-friendly applications. As, say gaming while chatting while transcoding while running a benchmark while running a virtual operating system which then relies as well on RAM amount. The motherboard is also somewhat a waste if you're not using heavy overclocking or extreme cooling etc. You could try the cheaper Asus Z68 Deluxe version.

Perfect choice for GPU cooling though. One of the best of the market. As for sound card I would judge the Asus xonar dx or essence XT to be far superior. 1000 watts is overkill. I bought the same amount because I'm aiming for crossfire as well as watercooling and Cold cathodes and other stuff. And I admit the 800 watt version was not in stock so I had to pick this instead. For the rest it is decent.

EDIT : Then a crossfire 6950 is appropriate as well as the thousand watts PSU.

The Ram i really don't know much about. So it was just a guess. 2600 is there for future upgrade as well as the 1000 watts being there to handle a pretty intense water cooling unit as well as future dual 6950's or even dual 6990's.

The sound card, from what i've found is the best possible choice. Was unaware anything stood close?
