N00b SLI questions

Thread Starter
So I was planning on SLI-ing my videocard but checked newegg and they don't offer my EVGA GeForce GTX 460 SSC+ anymore. So my question is that do I need to stay with a 460 or can I SLI with a 560 Ti? And would I have to stick with EVGA or does it not matter what manufacturer I buy?

Thanks,
Steven

It has to be a 460, and it has to be the same type (i.e. 768mb, 1GB SE, 1GB) manufacture does not matter, although I personally like to stick with the same manufacture (but I'm anal about how things look in my case )

It just has to be the same card. If you have a reference card then any other reference card will work. I know for sure you can not SLI it with a 560.

you have to stay with the 460

also needs to be the same one, can't be the 768mb or SE version. only the 1GB

you can't sli two different cards together, most of the time.

Another question is that since they don't offer the SSC anymore would I have to run the two cards at the same speed/downclock my card?

Sli will default to the lower speed. No need to spend more on an ssc, just do the overclock yourself.

To elaborate on some comments above:

If you mismatch cards in SLI (in terms of the clocks designated in their bios), they will *apparently* run at two different speeds ... meaning that if you check the graphs in Afterburner, each will be running at the speed designated by it's bios.

However, you will likely find that the higher-clocked card will always have a slightly lower GPU Usage % vs the lower-clocked card, as it will be 'waiting around' for the slower card to finish it's rendering task.

The net result will be that the *actual* performance will be the same as it would be if both cards were at the lower of the two clock rates.

The fix for this is to use Afterburner to set them both to the same speed ... very easily done
