Well I currently only have a 1366x768, but if I upgrade I will get a 1080p one

Wrong. Just because GPU usage goes up doesn't mean you're not bottlenecked. The CPU still has the same exact amount of instructions it needs to do. CPU usually does physics effects, and it sends the information to the GPU for processing. If you're bottlenecked at a lower resolution, that same exact bottleneck WILL occur at a higher resolution. You're just cicumventing that bottleneck by putting more strain on the GPU.

Case in point:
GTA IV on my Athlon. At a low resolution (1024x768) with my GTX470, I got about 30 FPS, and like 20% GPU usage. At 1080p, I got the same 30 FPS, but I got closer to 50-60% GPU usage. I was still bottlenecked by the CPU.

What I was mainly wondering, is it worth getting an entirely new AM3 motherboard, phenom 970 and ddr3 ram (I currently only have ddr2 at 800 and am2) for like £170 + graphics card or just sticking with what I have an only upgrading the gpu?

I think you will be slightly bottlenecked at that res, though not a huge amount. My friend used to run a Q9550 OC'd to 3.6 and a GTX 275 on a 1366x768 and the bottleneck wasnt that bad.

If a budget is tight buy a nice AM3 mobo, some G skill ripjaws, and a phenom 2 X2 555BE and unlock it to a waud like me. If it doesnt unlock RMA it to newegg and just get another one that does. A nice mobo will run you 75$ + 87$ for the CPU + 30$ for some ripjaws, then save up for a new card.

Lower res = more work for the CPU
Higher res = less strain on the CPU, but going past a certain res will see minimal to no reduction in CPU usage.

Also Phenom I's are like basically 2 core duo's slapped together. (not core 2 duo)

I would say that you DEFINITELY should get a new CPU then GPU.
Anything beyond a 5770 and you're looking at a bottleneck

You will see a night and day difference by going with a faster CPU. Right now, the best bang for your buck is an i5 2500k with a P67 board of your choice. If you upgrade your GPU, I honestly feel that you likely won't see much, if any increase in performance.

Why would you think that INCREASING settings, will reduce the load? The load is exactly the same on the CPU regardless. The difference is that you're increasing the GPU load by going with a higher resolution. CPU load will usually stay the same.

pioneerisloud I think you are confused as to what a bottleneck is... Its when one component cant keep up with another, if both components are being strained equally, then it is technically no long a bottleneck

As res gets lower CPU usage gets higher since its more CPu intensive, thus creating a bottleneck at lower res. I think its because the GPU sends more frames to the CPU. But i know i am right and you are wrong so just go look it up.
