At that price I could get a sand bridge motherboard though, I was only going with AMD because they tend to be cheaper

I'm trying to figure that one out too. Look at my sig rig and I get no bottleneck either.

Just because you're getting full usage, doesn't mean you're not being held back.

Athlon II x4 @ 3.85GHz (NB @ 2750)
GT240 (forget the overclocks on it)
8GB DDR2-1100, 5-5-5-15-20 timings

i5 2500k @ stock 3.3GHz
GT240 (same overclocks, was flashed)
8GB DDR3-1600, 9-9-9-24 timings (stock)

In L4D2, I was getting 40-45 FPS maxed out with no AA on the Athlon. When I swapped to the i5 at stock, I was getting 75-80 FPS with 4x AA maxed out. This was usually only a problem when a large horde was coming out.

Again, just because you have a high enough average framerate, and just because you see full usage, doesn't mean you're not being held back. Believe it or not, the minimum framerates will make a WORLD of difference. I've seen it first hand.

I would prove this to you, but I lack those parts to prove it anymore. All I've got now is the i5 and a GTX580.

My nephews and I play L4D2 also. Even there stock 955 with HD5830 and stock 965 with 5850 there is no bottleneck and it is not laggy either.

I never said it was a bad bottleneck, I just said it was there. My Athlon II was fully playable in all my games. But I did notice a HUGE difference from minimum framerates going sky high when I switched to my i5. The Athlon was playable, yes. I never noticed the dips in frames from my minimums. But once I made the switch, it was obvious.

It's not something you actually notice, until you switch to a faster chip. I know it sounds odd, but its just how I saw it, and countless other people have seen it too.

GPU and CPU bottlenecks are too overused around here.

Sit at 720p, and your either going to get a CPU that can't keep up, or a GPU that's waiting for information. Increase resolution (1080p for example), the load on the CPU will stay the same, it's the GPU that's the deciding factor.

It's all a matter of personal preference, but I don't consider anything a bottleneck until I'm brought down under 30fps.

By the way, using GTA4 as an example of a CPU-intensive game is sort of a fail...at least use a game that's optimized One that scales to CPU speed and core count correctly, not a game that will run beautifully on a Core 2 Duo, and not run at all on an i7.

I'd stick with something around a 5770/GTS 450. Anything over that is a waste of cash, and all three have enough muscle for 1080p.

bottlenecking seems to be a confusing term here.

I'm not sure if Im bottlenecked but in all my games i always dip to around 40 fps in intense scenes but its in games like League of legends or Vindictus where it would take a 5500 FX to run...

Pioneer has a point though, my friend that has the exact same setup as me but with a 2600k instead not only never dips in games but hover around 6-10 FPS over on top of that.

Exact same video card, exact same games, different CPUs.

I would do that. Everyone know that Sandybridge is faster core vs. cores then the Phenom II's. So for me my cpu and gpus never going above 50% on any of my games I play.

EDIT
Plus the Athlon II are about 10-15 fps behind the Phenom II's.
