No. HDMI cannot be used in conjunction with any of the other outputs.

Active is to needed to convert between the incompatible DisplayPort and DVI interfaces in realtime.

Surely there must be a technical explanation
Something about the hardware limitations of the card not being able to output that many signals simultaneously, unless DisplayPort is used as one output. Using the adapter is just a workaround for that limitation. It has to be active to actually convert the signal, instead of just passing through.

The only way I think it would work otherwise is if you had a second card, and didn't crossfire them. I could be wrong about this, but I really don't think there is any other way to do it.

Surely there must be somewhere local you could get it from. I got mine locally, for only $35 - same one at newegg for $30.

Display port does not pass dvi signals, period. It's a dummy port requiring active links from secondary source, this being the active adapter or like that built into display port monitors.

How has this guy done it with VGA then, and no active adapters

Ok so lets say I'm trying this:

2xDVI
1x MDP-->DVI

You're saying that the card cannot handle 3 outputs? Or that it can't do three DVI outputs?

It can defintely do two DVI outputs using this configuration:
1xDVI
1xMDP-->DVI

Does this mean it's using an on-board DVI controller to work the displayport in this case, but when I plug another DVI cable in it craps the bed?

It must be the same with HDMI then too, right? Which is why using one of each won't work?

You can't cheat like that with Caymen because one of the two dvi ports shares its signaling with the hdmi port.

Go read the manual that came with your card. Then come back and read the help that has already been given.

I think that's because one of the monitors has the display port adapter? He says something like that in the beginning of the video.
