You're saying that the card cannot handle 3 outputs? Or that it can't do three DVI outputs?

It can defintely do two DVI outputs using this configuration:
1xDVI
1xMDP-->DVI

Does this mean it's using an on-board DVI controller to work the displayport in this case, but when I plug another DVI cable in it craps the bed?

It must be the same with HDMI then too, right? Which is why using one of each won't work?
Yes, the card cannot output more than 2 DVI signals at any one time. This is why you need the active adapter.

Looks like that guy in the video is still using an active adapter. For some reason he is assuming that because it does not have an extra USB cable that it is not active, which is just not the case. The Sapphire cable mentioned has no extra USB connection and is still an active adapter, as are others.

Look man, you just need to get the adapter, and it will work perfectly fine, there's really nothing else to say about it. It will not work until you do.

For future reference, those dvi slots are DVI-D and DVI-I they can only be used together for dual linking. Gotta use HDMI, DVI-D and display port for eyefinity, you cannot use both DVI slots together with either HDMi or displayport.

One thing that needs to be put out there. The reason that you have to have active adapters isn't what everyone is thinking. Both Cayman & Evergreen both have the same exact same feature in this one respect. Either arch only has 2 clock generators, so additional clock signals are necessary for syncing the monitors. That is why you need the active adapter. For synchronizing purposes, not for converting signals. However, to use Eyefinity w/ 3 or more monitiors, you need the additional reference clock to sync or the card will default to using only the monitors that it can sync.

HDMI, DVI, and Display port can be "converted" with passive adapters. The only conversion going on is which pin is located where, in the respective connectors on each end.

That is still active. The guy got his terms confused.

Active means there is a chip inside translating the signals, passive means the wires are just crossed to make the signal get through.

That DP -> VGA adapter, as all the others, is active, but many people mistake it for a passive one because it does not use external power, it gets the power it needs from the DP or mDP port.

Both look like DVI-I to me

This explains a lot. Some of my frustration was coming from the fact that if I JUST connected a MDP-->DVI twice I get signals fine, which means the adapters DO work, but once the thirs one comes in the card can't handle the proc and blanks out one

Thanks for your reply

I am using both DVI outputs + mini DP right now.

It appears upon further inspection (and an updated video from the same guy) that the DP-->VGA adapter IS active, it just costs around the same price as the NON-ACTIVE adapter for DP-->DVI
