Dell OEM reformat hanging

Doing some computer work for a co-worker. She has a Dell Studio laptop, and it was virus ridden with a locked out admin account. Rather than trying to reclaim the admin account and remove all the viruses, I asked her if a reformat was an option [after explaining what it entailed] and she agreed to let me.

So, I 'acquire' a dell OEM image of Windows Vista, and it seems to install fine until it reboots and tries to finish the install. The screen sits at "Finishing Installation ..." for about an hour or so, then drops to a black screen with a mouse and nothing else. Restarting after reaching this point doesn't solve anything either, and running the start-up repair from the bootable CD just runs for hours without doing anything.

I've tried three different Dell OEM images at the slowest possible write speeds with no difference in success. Any ideas? If this gets any more complicated, I might just install a linux distro and call it a night.

Check the bios for "Boot Sector Virus Protection" and turn it off. I had this same issue with a vista install ages ago.

Also if that fails try "fdisk /mbr" at the c: prompt to clear mbr.

You could possibly try secure erasing the drive before doing the format,or possibly partitioning the drive too see if that matters.

The MBR isn't locked through BIOS, though that was a good idea.

I'm currently booting up the ISO to try and get to a command prompt of some flavor.

So, I atleast got the damn thing to install. I had to change the SATA configuration from AHCI to IDE.
