Lime's P180 Computer Revival Project! [56K + tl;dr]

The story:
So I started off with an AMD build, a modest Phenom II 720 BE with an MSI NF750-G55 board (an awful board by the way, BIOS issues and a a non-working SATA port that many people seem to have) and a good ol' GTX 260 that I bought from our own Lord Xeb.

One day, I was taking a shower and came back to my room in the dark to turn on my monitor. Then... I knocked over my 1L water bottle right onto the top grating of my CM690 with my elbow. Needless to say, last summer sucked. RMA all of my water damaged parts took most of the summer, and Lord Xeb was kind enough to send me a 9800GTX... but it was damaged during shipping and I didn't know he had insured it so it's been sitting around my room until this day. Eventually, most of my stuff came back, and now I'm at my current sig rig.

Now comes the fun stuff. I got a hold of a Q9400 and 4 2GB DIMMs of cheap DDR2 RAM during the school year and figured I might as well switch to a quad-core since my x3 didn't unlock. There, I bought an XFX 780i from Borito4 (also from OCN ).

I had a lot of interesting overclocking adventures with the board, which all ended in a lot of failures thanks to my poor-man's RAM. It brought the Q9400 to 3.7GHz which was stable on LinX but not Prime95, which I still blame the crappy RAM on >

Eventually, I settled on a modest 3.2 GHz so I could just play GCN games via Dolphin.

So I've been surviving with a Q9400 @ 3.2 GHz until now. Then comes my story of this computer I got. I volunteer at this non-profit organization called FreeGeek (which has a number locations across the US) which takes old computers and rebuilds them to avoid letting them go to dumps. They've got a policy which lets you to take a computer home after helping them out for a while.

After a few weeks of biding my time, I ended up getting a nice and scratched up P180 with an ASUS P5-B Deluxe in it. This is where the revival slowly begins.

P180 side-panels when I got it:

The insides of the free computer:

Annoying thing with the front bezel:

Broken stuff on the case panels:

I forgot to take a picture of the scratched up computer before I dismantled it so I only have pictures of the side-panel unfortunately.

Since the case sucked so much, I decided some renovation was in order. My dad is quite handy with things so I asked him to help me out a bit with my case.

After some sanding and painting, here's what the side-panels look like:

I lost a bunch of pictures I was going to upload because I accidentally formatted my camera when using SARDU ;(

More pictures in a little bit

So I called into Antec last week for some help with replacements for some of the parts in my case. Their customer support really is awesome.

I love them. They will see my business some day. Just not for that hideous Lanboy Air

They asked me to order something, however, so I did. And that came today in the mail!

3.5" rails for a card reader, not for a drive

Waiting for the other Antec parts. More pictures later.

Man, this case kind of sucks for case management. Ghetto electrical tape mod > you.

Ugh, these things make case management *really* suck. Why couldn't they just trim out that part where you hold the fan or bend it or something? And that part where the tray and the 3.5" bay connect... this case could have been better designed from the start

Maybe I should try my hand at cutting this fool up?

It's what you do when no one wants to hire you and you're in college.

As an unrelated project, this was supposed to be my Terraria server was supposed to be hosted on this... I had more exciting pictures with it all disassembled and in the oven but I suck at formatting the correct drives and lost a bunch of pictures :/

Sigh... I'm sad. Although.. I also got it for free. Before I baked it.

Hehe, just sent out the netbook RAM for replacement yesterday

Anyways, I started taking out the rather outdated motherboard and things from the case yesterday.

Passive cooled video card.

Good god, it sucks.

The hard drive it came with. Massive storage, as you can see.

Boo! I'm missing a rubber hard drive grommet in the bottom HDD rack! ;_; Good thing the Antec guys are awesome

The motherboard in all its glory. ASUS P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP. So pretty. The CPU cooler is a... Thermaltake Big Typhoon? I remember hearing it was pretty good way back when.

Crappy cheapo RAM but hey, it's a free 4GB lol.

Behind the board case cable management ;P

They need to make these damn CPU cables longer.

Motherboard when off.

Motherboard when on. What a great touch, haha. This picture seemed less blurry on the camera...

Built in wireless is useful-tier for people without ethernet in the walls like me. I wish I had ethernet in my walls.

It works I used those scissors to turn it on hahaha.

And there ends most of what I did last night. More pictures once I can get a hold of some things that were shipped to me.

I'll leave you guys with this picture though. Can anyone guess what I'm planning?

Peace!
