Sister needs a DSLR for class

Thread Starter
Hey all,

My sister is about to start in a photography class in college for her major. I'm not sure what the actual focus of the class is, however they require a DSLR (professor linked everything from an Xt to a T3i).

She doesn't seem all too interested in getting into photography and is looking to get "the cheapest available". I've got an Xsi which I'm really happy with and I'm fine loaning it to her temporarily but can't loan it to her for the whole semester. I'm not crazy about buying the cheapest available as that's just not my style, however she's on a tight budget and asked for my help finding her a camera. And with that I'm turning to y'all, the deal wizards, what would y'all recommend, what can y'all find to get her all set up and ready.

I'm assuming she'll be fine with a kit lens for this class as the teacher didn't mention anything different, besides body and lens, she'll just need a memory card and some sort of case (I call her the destroyer of technology lol).

Thanks for y'alls help!

the cheapest NEW dslr would be either a olympus e410 (something like that) or sony a280, a500, etc. neither of these are bad, but they arent mainstream so she will have trouble borrowing lenses and such.

both bodies (e420 or a290) i have seen for <300 new.

Have her get Canon or Nikon, then she can probably borrow some lenses. For Canon I would recommend at least a T2i from the Canon Loyalty program. As for Nikon, I would recommend a D3000 or higher.

have her try to borrow a camera and see if she is still not interested in photography. if she still has no interest in learning about it then i personally wouldnt buy her a camera if it will just sit around. and if she grows an interest then you can help her out and get a camera that she can borrow lots of lenses for such as canon or nikon which are the most common brands

She'll probably end up using my canon xsi for the first few weeks, but after that she'll need something of her own for the class. I'm leaning towards suggesting a canon to her since I do have one, and I have a few basic lenses she can use. I'm open to Nikon's as well, but would like to stay with those two common brands as I feel she'll have the most support with these while in school.

I realize this isn't the greatest situation and I find it silly that they have to buy dslr's for a one semester class. I wish I could part with my canon for longer but I'm just not crazy about going 4 months without it. And by the way, I'm not putting money towards this purchase, she is just wanting some suggestions on what to buy to meet the class requirements for the least amount of money.

You can always buy used from places like KEH or POTN. I've seen XSi bodies go for about $320 on there. Slap on an 18-55 IS for ~$80 and you're ready to go with a capable beginner's kit for $400.
