Coupling two Graphic Cards?

Thread Starter
Hi
Had a little question in mind , I bought myself a 512MB nvidia graphic card and then upgraded and bought a new 1 Gb Nvidia card , now the 512 Mb card is lying waste , can i couple them and make them work in one PC ??

Or if not what should i do...

Also my 1 Gb graphic card has DDR2 written on it, So if i buy a new gigabyte G41 motherboard in which RAM is DDR3 will also the graphic card have to be DDR3 or will this one work??

Thanks for any help!

You can SLI with 2 identical cards. If they're both 9600GT's, then yes. If one is a 9600GT the other is a 9800GT, then no you cannot. If you have 2 monitors, you can also use one graphics card per monitor too (works well because then your GPU will go into low power 2D mode with only one monitor per GPU). You could also use the lesser card as a PhysX card (if it can handle PhysX). That's the only way you could use both.

GDDR2 and GDDR3 (and 4 and 5) make absolutely no difference from your system RAM. So you can feel free to upgrade to your heart's content with them independently.

If your older card supports physx you can run it as a dedicated physx card while the newer one runs your graphics.

What are your PC specs?

Thanks for the prompt reply , umm so if the new board has a DDR3 RAM , this DDR2 graphic card will work..?? Btw this is a 9600GT can u tell how to couple? Because i have heard that they use PCI-Xpress slots (both my cards) and one motherboard has only one slot....is it true?

What's the other card? You have one 9600GT, what's the other card you have?

And yes, GDDR and regular system memory (DDR) are two completely different things. If you're upgrading your board and RAM though, you might as well upgrade into newer technology, like LGA1155 and Sandy Bridge. Would be a better investment of your money instead of buying an overpriced DDR3 LGA775 board.

Most video cards will use a PCI Express slot, yes that's correct. In order to use 2 cards, you'll need 2x PCIe 16x slots (the full sized PCIe slots). In order to use SLI, your board has to support SLI (or use an SLI hack, again, still needs the 2 slots).

It looks like YOUR motherboard only has 1 PCIe 16x slot (most of the generic Intel boards for 775 were only 1 slot). So you can only use one graphics card in your machine (without using a dremel on it at least and cutting the board up). Some motherboards have many more PCIe 16x slots though. Some have 2, 3, 4...I've seen up to 8 on one motherboard (can only use 7 GPU's with Windows though).

There's really not much you can do with both of those cards. They won't SLI, neither is capable of Nvidia PhysX. You could run a monitor per card, but those cards run cool enough it won't matter... Hmmmm

If you're sticking with the Core 2 Duo, why do you need a new board? If you're wanting to get into overclocking (hence this site), I suppose you could look around for a good overclocking board for cheaper. P35 and P45 are both great overclocking chipsets. You could step into like an Asus P5Q Pro or Gigabyte P45 UD3. I imagine you should be able to pick those up used relatively cheaply. You won't find a "good" LGA775 board anymore these days. Intel is now 3 generations newer now.

There's really no exact reason you'd NEED a DDR3 motherboard either. You won't see virtually any benefits from going from DDR2 to DDR3 on that setup. You'd see more of a difference by upgrading to 4GB of RAM (DDR2) instead of the 2GB you have now.

Hmm ok , I am upgrading my motherboard because its giving me BIOS issues , so the alternative is , I sell my 8400GS , but to whom? And then I plan to keep the processor same , as for board my retailer told me he would provide the G 41 with 4 GB DDR3 , but then i just realized my graphic card had DDR2 written on it , so didnt know what to do , I am not at all aware as to how to overclock and might end up doing some **** , so can you suggest a board which might preform well and suit my needs ??Thanks

Well, like I said a good P35 or P45 motherboard would be absolutely perfect. You'd be able to re-use your current RAM (except one model of P45, forget the exact model), re-use your existing CPU, you could literally re-use everything in your machine.

The Asus P5Q Pro and Gigabyte P45 UD3 are both very high end P45 boards that will do anything and everything you could ever want out of an LGA775 board.
