What would you guys recommend, and performance wise which is better?

GTX 460 performs exactly between the 6850 and 6870 - a 2GB 460 would be useless as the GPU isn't fast enough to be limited by the memory in any resolution. Go for the 6870 unless the 460 is significantly cheaper as the 6870 is usually 5 - 10% faster.

6870 easily.
6870 was meant to compete with 470, and 6850 was meant to compete with 460, and that extra GB of VRAM on the 460 will not increase performance in any way unless you were already hitting a VRAM wall (unlikely below 2560X1600).

If you're on a GTX 460 768MB now, going to one of these two would be a bad upgrade imo. I think you should move to something like a 6950 or GTX 560 Ti. They will offer you much more performance.

Actually the GTX 460 and 6850 are about equal. The 6870 is about 10% faster generally.
