5870 crossfire still worth it?

Thread Starter
I am strongly considering adding another 5870 to my rig to run in crossfire, as I have the opportunity to buy 2 used for $300. However, I don't know if its still worth it.

As old as the 5870 is getting, is it still worth getting another for xfire? After all, the Radeon 7000 series and Nvidias Kepler cards are supposed to start coming out before to long.

If you already have one, Id say yea get one for cheap. But if not, then id say get a 6950 TFIII and unlock it. The 1GB frame buffer lets the 5870s down for their longetivity, like my cards. But they should last untill the next gen refresh is out

Edit: That is a good price tho, your not gona match that power for that price, if you dont mind using less than 1080p for some titles thn go for them

Get them they're still very powerful cards and scale very well when crossfired, if anything re-sell them on ebay BitCoin users will snatch them up for $270+ easy.

I'm not that worried about the 1GB of memory, as the max resolution I will be running at is 1920x1200. I am more concerned about how they will perform running some new games that I am interested in, mainly BF3, Diablo 3, and Skyrim.

I say get one. They will not be obsolete for a long time. If you get caught up in the thought of 7xxx series cards coming out and you have a 5xxx series, then it sounds bad, but a 5870~6950 in performance and crossfired would be a monster.
I believe they are worth it. There isn't that much difference in the performance in comparison with the 6970 bar the tesselation performance, but that gap has been closed with latest drivers. And that's my personal experience. Get one on the cheap. And that should still last you for a good 2 years at least

They will do fine. You don't need more memory unless you run 3 monitors.

pull the trigger, that's still an awesome card to own, not to mention, a monster in crossfire.

Im going to go ahead and do it. It seems like a good price and I get to see the card working before buying them. This should get me through some upcoming games at good/max settings with a decent frame rate.
