U2412m (x2) arrived yesterday. Good initial impressions.

First off, sorry for the HORRIBLE pictures, I don't own any camera besides my cell phone and the lighting in my room is terrible.

IMG_20110809_185950.jpg

Initial Impressions:
Excellent build quality. The stands are exactly what you'd expect from a dell ultrasharp display. AG coating does not bother me at all, looks like any other normal matte display. (I don't know what people fuss about). Nice tactile buttons and a very friendly GUI when I first powered the display on and checked out the menu. Very easy to raise up and down / rotate to portrait.

ZERO backlight bleeding. From what I can tell, the two that I received have very uniform panels w/ no edge bleeding. Like most other IPS displays, it does have that IPS glow, but after seeing it initially with my 47" Vizio Full Array LED-LCD HDTV (which I believe is also an LG Panel) I knew it wouldn't bother me.

Graphics
Very good contrast compared to my 2233rz. Sharp images and great colors compared to the TN panels I have used in the past. I was worried I would miss 120hz, but after gaming for a few minutes I found it to be a non-issue.

They say there should be some banding of darker shades due to dithering associated w/ the 6bit panels that simulate 8 bit, but if its going on, I have not noticed it yet.

Ghosting doesn't seem bad, I would think after using a 2233rz for so long that if it was bad I would have noticed it right off the bat with the difference in response times, but I really didnt at all. Reviews say there is a little more overdrive trailing, but less ghosting. I see it a bit when I look really close with fast cursor motion and compare it side to side w/ my 120hz panel, but TBH I cannot notice it at all in games and without the other display next to it, it looks 100% normal.

Gaming:
I spent a few hours playing CS 1.6/BC2/COD:BO which are the most three recent FPS titles I have played enough to get good at, so I use them as a benchmark in terms of mouse/display performance. Being totally zoned in and dropping 4.8 k/d in my last bc2 map was almost a rush haha. The colors and sharpness of this panel make the game so immersive compared to the blander colors and fast action of the 120hz panel I used before.

All I can say is that I have been playing CS since like 1.3 and this monitor shows no sign of holding me back. I have been very sensitive to input lag in the past, which is why I stuck with my NEC crt until I picked up a 2233rz in 2009. Surprisingly, I had zero complaints with this display.

Im starting to wonder if sacrificing quality for 120hz is really worth it at this point, they have clearly made great improvements w/ eIPS tech and the response times/input lag is getting to a point where these IPS displays are getting good for semi-serious gaming. (wow that sounds super nerd.)

Also, I will mention that on CS 1.6 I noticed the normal amount of tearing your would see running 100FPS on a 60hz panel, but it does not bother me at all. I previously played at 100hz on my 2233rz and I am personally 100% used to tearing. VSYNC is horrible in terms of what it does w/ mouse input lag and I never run it. On the other hand, with BC2 & COD I did not notice "any" tearing at all. It may have been present and I was just looking past it, but I played for an hour or so without even thinking to look for it and I never noticed it at all.

Consensus:

Keeper.

Pictures:

Keep in mind, that my droid x camera SUCKS. There isn't really any bleeding or blooming going on, its just TERRIBLY exposed.
I also think I can get my hands on a slightly better camera this evening if anyone wants any other pics. I will likely try to take some better ones regardless.

Went from this: (2233rz & 2253H)

I did the same. Had to talk to a customer service rep, never got the 20% coupon emailed to me. Getting very excited I'm moving up from a Asus vw246.

If you sign up for the Dell small business mailing list you get a 20% off coupon. I had to talk to a cust rep though bc they never sent it to me. I'm sure you will have to do the same but saved me 80 beans!

Also, me and other peeps have gotten discounts ifyou asking POLITELY for them either at Dell home or small business. Not all the reps will give em to you, but sometimes it pays off. I got my Dell U3011 for $1,142 with 5 year warranty after asking them to please honor their expired coupons. Took almost an hour and the supervisor had to speak with his manager but it finally paid off in the end.

Yea, I have a few business contacts at dell through work. I was able to ask someone nicely and they just sold them for $319 + free shipping each w/o a coupon. Total after tax came to a bit under $700.
