I have (or had, actually - it's currently in storage) a router running NUT, and one of my UPSes is attached to that. When the power goes out the UPS tells the router, the router telnets into my other servers and shuts them down. Once the power comes back up, the router gets the power ok signal back from NUT and sends magic packets to the servers on the LAN to wake them all up again. The power draw on the router UPS is really low so that battery lasts for a couple of hours - longer than any outage is (hopefully) likely to be, so there is still a system there to bring all the servers online.
