I can't remember if morrowind is on steam or not, but I assume it would be. I didn't have any prior knowledge to the Elder Scrolls series before I played Oblivion and I was still able to understand what was going on.
Morrowind is in fact on steam, and I bought it simply because of the ease of downloading it in ten minutes

Morrowind to me has more emphasis on exploration while oblivion pushes you in the right direction with the markers on the compass. If you want a TRUE TES experience, give morrowind a try, bit be prepared to explore everything!

If your computer can handle it, I recommend trying the morrowind 2011 graphical/audio overhaul. Google it

Along with that, I also think that jumping back to Morrowind isn't a bad idea to get a better feeling of the roots of the series.
I agree with you completely. Most of those who came out of Morrowind and bought Elder Scrolls were disappointed to see that the alien and bizarre goings on of Morrowind weren't in some way translated and incorporated in Oblivion. Many of the complaints were that Oblivion was way too normal. I have seen several interviews with Todd Howard, the driving force behind the series, and he actually addressed this particular critique and he said that Skyrim has tried to incorporate both the bizarre nature of Morrowind and the fantasy epic that oblivion was. Hopefully he's managed to find some harmony between the two. While we all condemn the increasing accessibility, in lay terms, the "dumbing down" of games, we must remember that what made Elder Scrolls were its interesting plots and characters.

Playing Oblivion now before Skyrim would be like seeing the next 007 with only half of it's CGI.. I would not recommend it less you ran out of RPG's to play
