Prepping My Rig for College

Thread Starter
I'm going to move into college dorms, and I want to revamp my sig rig so that it will work in that environment.

I'm buying a new case, new motherboard, and if I have money left over, a new cpu cooler. I will likely buy an HD 7000 series graphics card in the future.

I see myself as having two options:

The first (and most preferred) option is to buy a micro ATX case like the NZXT Vulcan that is both rugged and small, but still has good cooling. Obviously if I go down this route I need to buy a micro ATX motherboard. I want to get one that supports SLI/Crossfire in case I go down that road in the future, and I would PREFER if I could get one that supports PCIe 3.0 because the 7000s are said to be taking advantage of that technology. Finally, my power supply is NOT modular, so cable management COULD be an issue especially in a micro ATX case.

If I can't find a case/mobo combo that has good cooling, Crossfire support, cable management, and (preferably) PCIe 3.0, I will likely go for a small and/or portable mid tower case and buy an Asrock extreme4 gen 3 motherboard (which DOES have Pcie 3.0 support). Cases I'm looking at are things like the CM Storm Scout, Corsair 400r (if it comes out in time), and Fractal Design Arc Midi.

If my case has a window/I have the money, I will probably either buy a midranged closed loop CPU cooler like the Corsair H70 or a cool looking air cooler like the NZXT Havik.

Keeping in mind that my "hierarchy" of sorts goes crossfire/sli support > cooling = size > cable management > PCIe 3.0, what are some good options?

Is there a micro ATX mobo on the market that supports PCIe 3.0?

For cases I would look at the Lian Li PC-A05BN case. Very spacious for a mini tower and can even fit a full ATX board if you so desire, going to be the case I get for my college downsizing. Not sure what m-atx lga 1155 motherboards support pcie 3.0 but gigabyte says all their 6 series(p67/z68) mobos will support it with a Bios update so you could look at their selection.

No offense but I would get or purchase "a ghetto looking" case.

See you don't want to attract attention for theft or whatnot.

Small case with good cooling and cable management? Fractal Design Define Mini

Boom.

For a mobo, nothing really out right now in the PCIe 3.0. Will do more research later

edit: from what I see, there's a couple asrock motherboards with it, but they're full blown ATX. ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z is a relative of my Crosshair V which I've been very happy with. Z68 chipset and CFX/SLI capability

And for a cooler, you'll probably want to use a closed loop simply because of the space, especially with OCs

If you're in a single dorm, just make sure to lock your doors. Or if not, find a means of securing your case to your desk.

No need to toss your rig into some ill-functioning beige box of old

I guess when you get right down to it, my question is whether or not I'm going to be able to successfully transfer my sig rig into a micro atx case without too much cooling problems

or

Asus P8P67-M PRO

you won't have any cooling problems... many good cases out there does great cooling...just get good fans and you be good to go... the fractal case someone suggested is actually pretty good and discrete and offers lots of cooling options.

in college things get stolen. better off bringing a single core 939 rig and leave the expensive stuff at home.

My room kept 5 desktops and 3 laptops (collectively worth nearly 10 grand) plus audio hardware, monitors, consoles, and more. However I knew it was a good community (and we had deadbolts for the doors). If you're nervous, hold off on it for a bit until you see what its like.
