Rails: Single vs Multiple

post #1 of 28

Corsair (Single 12V @100.4A) + More reviews best rating:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139014

Antec (8 x 12V @ 30A) + Second best:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371043

From my understanding the number of rails doesn't really matter as much as the amperes. Is that right?

Also what types of peripherals get their power from the 12V rail? If it is multiple rails how do you distinguish which rail they are getting the power from?

Lastly is it true that the more amperes * voltage on a rail.. the greater the chance of it catching fire?

My first question is what you'll have in your system, particularly the video card(s).

By the way, the best I can personally answer the questions is by posting a link to this thread:

Good explanation of rails, thanks for the link.

Answer to Q2:
Processing units (Central or graphical, maybe anything else) They need 12V

Answer to Q3:
Yes.. there is a greater chance of it catching fire or killing my hardware.

It is too bad cause I liked the corsair psu better.

If you don't like the HCP-1200 for whatever reason, you could look at other excellent 1200+W PSUs such as the Enermax MaxRevo 1200/1350W.

Once I have the card directly above I will put it in the primary pcie x16 slot and use the air cooled as the secondary

Oh in the mean while I have an

All you need is a good 850W for this.

I need it compatible with future upgrades.
I am going to have 5 HDDs which i guess I should have included in that upgrade scenario.

I am thinking one or two 10,000RPM drives

In any case the important part is that it needs both forward and backwards compatibility. According to my research it has a TDP of 250Watts so times 2 makes it 500Watts for the GPUs alone.

+200Watts or so for the CPU 700 That is exaggerated cause with water cooling I want to see how high i can OC it. The same goes for the graphics cards so lets say 550 for the gfx and put it at 750Watts total so far

Then with peripherals I figure 200Watts to to be safe, never know what you might want to add in later.

Newegg suggests 1200Watts and extreme power says 900
I figure 1100 or 1000 watts.. or higher would be fine. If I go higher I won't need to worry about upgrading it unless power requirements rocket far higher or different connectors are needed and aren't compatible with the modular sockets.
=================
Important question part
=================
I am more concerned about the recommended psu req for the 580s which says x wattage @ 48Amperes.. Now that doesn't mean IT needs 48 amperes right? that is a figure which assumes a single rail.. No?

I will worry about the wattage and all that in the end, not too concerned about it. It is this whole rail / amperes.. this power dispersion stuff I need help with.
