If you're getting a 955, get a GA-990XA-UD3, to get yourself a Bulldozer/Zambezi CPU later.

imo, he might as well wait for bulldozer to get a new build to see how everything matches up.

i'm sure phenom II will drop even more in price by then too

I was in a similair boat as you recently, I had an older system go bad so I needed a new motherboard + cpu + mem for around $300. I went with the system in my sig. I didn't get a BE CPU because I wanted something temporary until bulldozer came out. As other's have suggested, try to get a motherboard that supports AM3+ so that you have some options to upgrade to a better chip. I got the following:

This was $64.99 when I bought it

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231314

This had a $15 discount when I bought it

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103809

I went with this motherboard because it had an IDE port which is useful for me since I still use 2 IDE hard drives. Also it had on-board video which is good to have as a backup.

1. AM3+ is a dead socket and being replaced by FM2 for Bulldozer Enhanced in 7 months
2. P67 Motherboards support Ivy Bridge processors that are being released in march of next year.
3. P67/I3 2100 is cheaper to build then 990FX/X4 955
4. I3 2100 is better in games

Choice is simple. Get Sandy Bridge

Enough arguing, this is all besides the point....

The AMD setup will overclock further with a better board. That limited 4+1 power phase motherboard you chose will NOT take an overclocked quad core very well. So you will NEED a better motherboard to overclock it.

The SB i3 will eat the quad AMD, with the AMD at 4.0GHz and the i3 at stock in gaming. The i3 won't overclock very far due to the locked multiplier (it will overclock though). Keep in mind, the i3 2100 has HT, its literally HALF of an i7 2600. It's more than enough CPU for gaming, even at bone stock.

I'd go for a P67 or Z68 board (probably P67 because its cheaper), and the i3. Then upgrade to the i5 2500k or an Ivy Bridge chip later. It's definitely going to be cheaper in the beginning, and just as future proof as getting an AM3+ board.

Agreed pioneer. Newegg has the MSI P67 C43 which is able to do Xfire and SLI for 109.99. Add the 2100 and you'll be set till Ivy bridge is released.

This would be my recommendation:
Open Box MSI P67 C43 board - $80 free shipping
Core i3 2100 - $125 free shipping

Total is $205 shipped.

You can overclock the i3 a little bit (around 3.5-3.8GHz or so as a guess). It has 4 threads, so its JUST as good at gaming, but its faster clock for clock (by a lot) than the AMD quads are. It's future proof for Ivy Bridge, or you can throw an i5 2500k or i7 2600k for some insane 4.5-5.0GHz clocks. All around, the best bang for your buck right there.

The only thing the AMD would do better at, would be professional use, such as encoding due to having 4 REAL cores. Even then, I'll bet the i3 will perform very close. In gaming, the i3 is going to stomp the AMD quad.
