in the suggestions you made, I'd say the i3 simply because the architecture is faster overall.

EDIT: Go for a p67 or z68 board over an h61 board, too.

The i3 2100 has better peformance, but you won't be able to overclock it.

So go with the Phenom II X4 955 BE.

I would say that the i3 is more future proof.

Being that the I3 is Sandy Bridge, it is irrefutably the more future proof of the two.

SB Architecture > K10 Architecture

I feel a hole in my soul because I can't recommend anything AMD besides video cards, HTPC solutions or IGP systems. Even saying that, people still choose the h67/z68 and 2500k when they want a IGP. The llano is very good, but besides the IGP the benchmarks for everything else don't come close to the Sandy bridge.

dont know how anyone was able to properly answer you without the question, what are you going to be doign with said system?

if your looking for number crunching, i3. but id spring for the i5.

budget gaming, and not quite as good for intense number crunching, but it still depends on what your going to do.

please dont just say office work of video compression/rendering. what program/codec/general size/defintion of video etc etc.

In the end you are probably going to tell him to go with SB.. Since there even IS an offering at that price point, why not get the fastest he can?
