Turbo boost turning off then on mid game.

Hey guys, I'm having a problem running rtcw:et on my new i5-2500k rig. I'm pretty sure the problem is that turbo boost is turning itself off then on again while playing the game. My fps drop from a stable 76 to 20fps for a split second every 3-5 seconds or so. I minimized the game and had a look at cpu-z and I watched as my core speed jumped up and down at the same timing as the frame rate drops.

Is there any way I can tell windows to use the full turbo speed for that application? Or am I better off just turning the feature off in bios? I really would like to keep the thermal/electrical savings that turbo boost offers, but if it's not possible it's gotta go. I think the main problem is that RTCW:ET is such an old game, that it does put enough stress on the cpu constantly to get turbo boost to stay enabled.

Anyone else run into problems like this? I'm sorry if this has been answered before here, I did a search but didn't find much.

Things I've tried:
Starting ET from a batch script setting the process' affinity to a single core.

results: No luck

Any help would be appreciated, I've been scratching my head for 3 days now.

even if the computer is turning turbo boost off, that shouldnt 1/4 your fps...

on my board the only way to overclock is using turbo boost, and i've had no such problems with frames jumping up and down

try running prime95 on one core, whilst you run the game and see if it solves the problem (if so then it might be the energy savings)

id take a look at your graphics card usage too

Windows power settings and set it to high performance might help. But still, running at 3.3GHz is way more than enough for that game. Something else is up.

Thanks for the help troubleshooting this, I managed to get the turbo solid during game play and it was still stuttering. I'm going to do a clean install of the game again, as the source I had for the install had been sitting on an external HDD for a while and may have gotten corrupted.

I hope the card is still okay, as I just installed it into this new rig from my old one where it was performing like a champ. Heck it even got a good cleaning when I swapped it over. It might also have something to do with v-sync or some other video setting I had in my old et config.

But thanks for helping me eliminate turbo boost as the culprit!

Do you have any monitoring app running, that poll every 3-5 seconds??
Because, I had similar to this when running Aida64!

edit, I was only dropping a frame or two per second with Aida64
But still!

Hmm I did have cpu-z running to see if turbo was ramped up, but closing it and the asus ai suite didn't seem to do anything. I played with some graphics settings in the nvida control panel and it didn't seem to stop the fps drop. I'll just try fresh install of the game from a freshly downloaded source. Hopefully that's all the issue is *fingers crossed*

Solved!

It was the "Threaded optimization" option in the Nvidia settings for the game. RTCW:ET doesn't like it when that option is enabled, and I should have remembered that, but I haven't been using Windows natively for 3-4 years Thanks for the help guys!
