qx6700 temps on water?

Thread Starter
I installed a complete water set up on my qx6700. it's the only thing the loop is cooling.

My parts are Enzotech Sapphire scw-rev a cpu block, Swiftech mcp655 pump with Bitspower top, Swiftech micro res, and Swiftech MCR-220 rad. 1/2" id tubing.

I'm over clocked to 3.33GHz pushing 1.37vcore. My idle temps bounce between 38-42 my load temps peak at 68* for prime95 small fft's and I peak at 72* for IBT. As hot a chip as the qx6700 is do those temps sound about right?

Ambient temp of the room my rig is in is about 80*f

I think your temps are a wee bit high, though the QX6xxx series are known to run hotter than normal Q6xxx series.

For reference, I have a q6600 OC'd to 3.6Ghz @ 1.412v (ambient is 28*C / 82.4*F) and it idles at 32-34 between the 4 cores and hits a max of 61-63*C between the 4 cores for prime95. Take note that the only cooler I have is a hyper 212+ in an RV02 case.

I still think your temps are a bit high... Have you tried to make sure that air flow is not impeded intake to exhaust. have you also tried to re-apply TIM and re-seat the water block?

Haven't tried reset yet. thinking about it. What do you user to monitor your temps. I have core temp and real temp. with core temp I get the temps you are talking about on yours. real temp gets the higher ones I posted.

I figured go with the higher temps to err on the side of caution.

I know my loop is pulling heat, when testing full load the rad does get warm on the ends and the hoses get warm. right now the fans are mounted inside the case in a pull set up and the pump is set to 5.

I see similar temps at those clock/vcore on a mediocre air cooler but 5C lower ambient. I really hope you applied too much paste or something as I am planning to water cool my rig and was hoping for a bigger difference.

What were your temps at stock speeds / stock cooler / previous aftermarket air cooler? I forgot to measure mine with stock cooler as I removed it when installing the CPU. My VID was 1.18 in windows.

Post some clock/vcore settings if you want a direct comparison to me at the same settings, I suppose that only works if we have the same mobo etc though.

edit: what fans do you have on the rad?
I measured with HWmonitor, what did you use?

I'm actually oc'ed higher now with a bit more vcore.
I'm at 3.4GHz 1.38 vcore.
I found out my actual tjmax is 85*(I upped the vcore and clock and watched what temps the cpu started to throttle down, once I had a tjmax of 85 set I could watch the cpu hit 85* and clock its self down to stay below at 83*) and set core temp and Realtemp accordingly.

My idle temps are 32*c and load Intel burn test around 65*. I've got 2 thermaltake fans pulling through my rad.
With current set up I can not get a higher oc. To get stable at 3.5GHz and above the voltage required causes load temps break 85*

On air I was using a TRUE 120 I couldnt oc above 3.1GHz with out load temps being to high.

Very interesting.
For the sake of discussion I thought tjmax was 100* so your temps are under by 15*. Makes sense to me that a quad would run 10* hotter idling than a pentium dual core (e5300 at 30*). This is with an ambient of 20*. Also 65* load seems low. Not that this is relevant anyway as you found out where it throttles.

I got 3.4 for a while but at 1.42 after vdrop but not vdroop (then it was more like 1.38). I got put off when I hit 75* on one core while gaming. Pencil modded now so I get half the vdrop and no vdroop.

TT, those crazy orange things? I had one once but it was SO loud I was glad to sell it in an old case

Have you thought about lapping? If you do I would be interested in your results. I plan to do this to see if I can drop my temps on air.

Thanks for humouring me semi-resussing this thread, I'm gauging how much more I will be able to clock with a semi-decent water setup as water would be more fun than saving for faster hardware. Looks like I'll be going for a 360 rad instead of a 240 then... Since your OC is sorted I don't mind if you ignore my ramblings.

edit: did you try adn silly overclokcs liek 16x200?? I wondered about dropping the fsb as that kicks up the temp a lot for the same clock speed, eg 300x10 hotter than 266x11.

I have a QX6700 in my other rig and the temps at 3.3Ghz never go over 62C (At IBT). At 3.7Ghz it hits 72C under IBT. So i think yours is a hot one.

The parts of my water cooling are -> EK DCP 4.0 // EK Supreme HF Copper/Plexi // Swiftech MCW30 // BI GTS 240 // Swiftech Micro Res2.

What did you measure with? I'll assume it's as accurate as anything i used I forgot to mention in last post that when I put a 15 degree offset in coretemp, it matched Hwmonitor core temps, and the cpu temp in hwmonitor was within a couple of degrees of bios cpu temp.

With my 45nm dual core it seemed that you got either a low vid or a low temp chip. My low temp chip didn't clock very well in that it took a LOT more vcore to get the same clocks. The low vid chips do clock well, creating a lot more heat in the process. 45nm seems much more voltage limited than temperature though.

Seems to me that that applies here too, Devil is heat limited on a low vid chip but in theory is clocks well for a given vcore. Your vid being so high suggests that your chip doesn't heat up so much so quickly but won't clock so high, although 3.7 is pretty good! So maybe a higher vid is better on these chips with them being more temp bound? More research required! I'll be happy with anything over 3.6 on water but obviously I would like to hit 4GHz.

I apologise for the thred hijack but I think you were done with it I need to get myself on the owner's club page.

You have to remember with the QX6700's the revision plays a big roll in temps. Mine is an original B3, they over heated at stock speeds and voltages on some air coolers.

Another thing with these cpu's is you have to figure out the correct tjmax to know what your temps actually are(you can not just guess and hope the prog is reading correctly). I thought I was running 10* hotter than I actually am.
There is alot of debate on the web every thing from tjmax of 80 to 100.

I decided to find mine out for my self by actually pushing it there. theoretically it shouldn't hurt the cpu any hitting that point as long as your not putting insane voltages to it.

You sure got a hot chip. I didn't realize that the B3 chips were so much hotter. My Q6600 runs at 63* at 3.6GHz with1.48. I also have it under water.
