New Sli Setup...So Many Issues

Thread Starter
I just scored two 480's and I'm trying to set them up in SLI.

At first I couldn't get windows to recognize my second card for the life of me, finally I took out the first card and left the new one in the secondary slot, I got windows to load it, when I'd go to nvidia control panel it said I didn't have an nvidia card installed, so I went ahead and just reinstalled the existing drivers I had, and that got it to work. I played around with it and it seems to run perfectly well from that slot, bc2 played just fine.

So I then dropped in the first card again, and I was able to get it running in SLI. I tested out bc2 and everything seemed perfect, was getting 180-200 frames. Though i think the 3 times i tried to alt tab out of the game each time I got a black screen freeze and had to hard restart.

Since then, I've basically been not getting windows to make it past the loading screen without crashing or I'll crash on desktop. I've tried 3 different drivers initially 275.33, then 280.26, and now I'm on 266.58. I uninstalled them all in safe mode and rebooted between each uninstall/install.

I still have both cards in with sli disabled currently, and this seems to be the most stable I've had it as I'm writing this post. Just want to see if anyone has some ideas about what's going on.

Did you try both cards individually, because it seems like you only tried one by itself?

Yep I tried both individually, I should have mentioned I had the first one for an entire day before i got the second, the first one was running perfectly with no issues, and I got the second one to run perfectly by it self in the other slot, so It seems like both cards and slots are working fine.

Do you have a SLI bridge installed? Could be a faulty one too. SLI is a pain sometimes....

Yep I have a bridge installed, I have tried both positions, I'm not sure if it matters which position you use, I have it on the ones closest to outside of the case. Unfortunately this is my only bridge so I can't test another.

I thought I had 3 bad GTX470s for a while, it didn't boot or it would artifact at the logon screen sometimes it would even BSOD...

What I wound up trying was the 266.58 driver but I'd do a clean install of it and I WOULD NOT install the 3D Vision or the audio part of the driver...

Two of those cards work fine now but I really haven't tried the third yet...

Give it a shot who knows it might actually work for you also.

Thats funny that you mention that, that is to the T what I had just tried before making this thread, I installed 266.58 using the clean function, and didn't install 3d vision or the audio. I have been working on my computer for the last 4 hours with SLI disabled, and I didn't have any issues. The moment I turned SLI on, I got a black screen and had to hard reset. Now I back in windows and magically now I have no video drivers installed. I guess I will try re-installing 266.58, IDK what it is tho, somethings not right.

I can't believe it but I solved the problem, I did a lot of searching and it sounds like it's a fairly common problem, but nearly no one knows a solution, but I found this on another forum. The steps I took were:

1. Uninstalled the existing Drivers, Shutdown.
2. Took out the GFX card in the secondary slot.
3. Rebooted with one card, Installed Drivers, Shutdown.
4. Put in the Second GFX card again, reattached SLI Bridge.
5. Rebooted, waited about 2 mins for windows to finally install drivers for second GFX card.
6. Went to Nvidia control panel, and changed the resolution to 1024x768.
7. Enabled SLI within Nvidia control panel.
8. Changed resolution back to 1080p.

Everything is running perfectly now, it's crazy that this worked, I'm not sure about the resolution change at the end, but I didn't want to chance it. I know other people on the forums had this problem, and some of them probably ended up giving up with no solution, a lot of people question if its a weak power supply, but that doesn't seem to have anything to do with it, and probably unfairly cost people a lot of money to check. I am hoping that people will see this if they run into this problem as well.
