How would a decent tv today stack up against one of the discontinued elites?
From what I understand they don't make any panels as good as the Elites were. Nothing better has come out since. At least for plasma.

What really makes it stand out is that is has the blackest blacks of all the flat screens.

doubt it...more like l33t.

No doubt the Kuro line up was the best, but given the high standard, everyone should just make better displays regardless of a side brand.

Plasma ftw.

Panasonic and Samsung are pretty close, offer larger sizes than the old Kuros, and are 3D. They're also a hell of a lot cheaper. I got my Panny 55GT30 for $1600, and the black levels and PQ are awesome.

Much better all around value than the Kuros really. But there's still no disputing that the last gen Kuros offer the best 2D picture quality, but it comes at a steep price.

And the pixel per inch ratio goes down under... its like a wall of 1x1" pixels lol

I wouldn't want a 3D one I don't think. At least not right now
