Crossfire, different cards?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I'm currently looking into getting a 6950 to replace my gtx460 and was wondering somethign about crossfire.

LeT's say I wanna crossfire next year, will I need to find the exact same card? Or can it be a 6950 from another manufacturer? Could I crossfire let's say a 6950 and a 6970 together? Also, can I use my 460 for anything else if i use the 6950 or should I sell it?

One more thing, did AMD have any ETA for the HD7xxx series?

Here's the card I'm looking at... http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...r&promoid=1300

Sounds good?

Thanks

You can crossfire other cards and manufacturers.

You can crossfire the 6950 2GB with any 6950 1GB, 6950 2GB, 6970, or 6990.

You can use the GTX 460 for folding, or/and for Physx if you have any games that use it. It's usually not worth the money for Physx if you only have 1 or 2 games that can use it, so I would say sell the card.

EDIT:
The card you linked is a good one. See if you can find a Twin Frozr III for a similar price though. If not, that card will do just fine.

There is a chart somewhere that tells you what you can xfire with what. but manufacturer of the card dosent matter. PhysX card is bassically useless imo so sell it and put that money toward the new card.

You can crossfire your 6950 with any other 6950.

Yes, the 6950 can be crossfired with the 6970 and 6990.

That depends. I use a GTX 460 as a dedicated folder. You could also use it for PhysX, though there aren't too many titles out at present which take advantage of this. Also keep in mind that outfits like Newegg frequently sell OB GTX 460's for around $90, so you may not get much more than that for it.

SLI on AMD motherboard? It takes a hack to do it right?

It's not a hack, it's just a patch that you install.
However, you're not 100% guaranteed to sucessfully get SLI. My 890GXM-G65 would NOT SLI GTX 460 1GB's, but many have been able to SLI 8800GT's on it.
