Overclocking i7 980x

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I recently got a new rig, and I decided to overclock it today. Here are my system specs:

i7 extreme 980x 3.33ghz
geforece 590x 3gb
Gigabyte g.1 gorilla MOBO
12gb corsair vengeance ddr3-1600
HAF 932 case
1000w coolermaster power supply
asetek 550lc cooling system for cpu

I am new to overclocking so I tried to go a safe way with this. I downloaded Gigabyte Easy Tune 6 and used that to OC my cpu. I downloaded CPU-Z, Prime95, and RealTemp.

I OC'ed my cpu to 3.75ghz, right now according to CPU-Z I am running at: 1.32v, bus speed is 150mgz, not sure what else to include here. I ran prime95 using realtemp to monitor the cpu temp. I ran it for about 3 hours, temp averaged 68-70c and never went above 71c. It idles around 32c.

Does all that sound good? Are there any suggestions on anything that I might have to change?

Also, is there anything else that I should change in the BIOS, such as settings for my memory? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I guess you would be able to change Bclk to 160 without changing anything else. Leaving you with 4.0 GHz.
If you are lucky even 168 would work, giving you 4.2 GHz.

Always overclock via bios, and with the 980x, I think your voltage is too high for 3.75, should be able to do 3.9 easily with lower voltage, always aim for 4GHz+. Although, it may be harder to get stable at higher speeds with that much ram, but it's possible.
I can run at at 4.2-4.4GHz with 1.32V. Way too high for 3.75GHz

Just with multiplier i can run 3.8 on the default voltage... you paid for the unlocked multi may as well use it imo..
Otherwise you could have got a standard 980 for half the price and just blk oc

INTEL I7 980....It replaced the 970...Did no one give you the memo?
$585

This cpu has a LOCKED Multi, Hence half the price of what a 980x was.

Like I said it has a locked Multi.
The 980 and 980x are two difference cpus.

980 has a QPI of 4.8 Voltage range of 0.8–1.300 V (intel specs)
980x has a QPI of 6.4 Voltage range of 0.8–1.375 V (intel specs)

The 980 is not an EE cpu as the 980x is.

(980)

(980x)

And OP
Just have a play around with your multiplier on the default 133blk and see what you get can your cpu to stable on the default voltage. Then work from that and slowly increase to see what you can get it too.
