This one line from that ancient article you quoted says it all:

However, this is early days for AMD and DDR3 and hopefully we will see DDR3 support mature for K10 as the newer revision cores come out.
That was 2 years ago, before the new 800 series ATI chips came along supporting 1333 mHz DDR3, now we are into the 900 series chips that support 1866 Mhz memory. You can go ahead and spend $100 on a faster CPU and plug it into that SLOW mobo/memory and I bet you 1 internet donut that you will get zero real performance boost, while spending that same $100 on a cheap new generation mobo with some fast memory will definitely show you some tangible performance gains. This will also give you a good foundation to continue upgrading.

Start with the CPU first and get that phenom II.
Then add another 2gb of ram, ddr800 is good enough.
Get the GTX 560 last.

If you could hold off on upgrading and save a bit more for a new motherboard as the others say, it will be very beneficial as you can also get cheap DDR3 ram, and prepare for bulldozer 8 cores if you get an AM3+ board

Can you spell the name of your motherboard properly?
Many of those lower end ASRock mobos are not at all suitable for high end Phenom II quads that consume lots of power due to underpowered VRMs and AM2 base design

Sorry that was Asrock N68-s not NS8-S and I found the Phenom X4 945 on its official supported list.

That's good to hear. I dont have enough money to buy a new motherboard and new ram. Buying those 2 would really hamper my upgrading time frame especialy in our country. Ive got to maximize the money I've got haha XD

Saying slow memory is fine does not make it so. The fact still remains that your board will BARELY run a 4 core, and even if it will run ok, it will be bottlenecked with too little and too slow memory to make a difference in gaming performance. You would have better gaming performance if you spend your $100 on a cheap mobo and fast memory.

OK thats clearly wrong^
What does barely run on a quad really mean?
If you dont know the latency of the ram how can you say its slow?

Is cas8 ddr3 at 1600 faster than cas 5 ddr2 at 800?

The occed cpu-nb on the maxxmem ddr2 screeny skews the results a little but the point remains the same, there is a hundred and something mb throughput between the 2.
Is it worth changing mobo and ram for?don't think so.

Problem is 2gb of ddr2 costs what 4gb of ddr3 does, but there is still the issue of a sensible mobo...
OP,put another 2gb in the motherboard and go for any compatible quad, but upgrade the cooler so you can OC it a little bit,if the motherboard allows.
If not then a 3ghz quad is still plenty for most games.hell a triple would be fine.

Yep I checked the current price listing if Im planning to get more ddr2 ram and its more expensive already but i will have to shelf out more if im going to buy a new MOBO. Im planning to have a slight OC on the Phenom II 945 and bring it to 3.2-3.4 range. How are the temps on stock? My oced Regor runs a 40-55 degrees in our tropical climate and has not been giving me problems.

with the stock cooler-mine ticked over at roughly 33c...
it could do 4ghz on the stock cooler but only for validz though hehe,
anything remotely stressful and it would bsod.

Jadariin, Definitely go with the CPU upgrade, also are you using an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) version of windows?

Get yourself the cpu first. I would opt for the GTX 560 Ti and not the GTX 560, if cash is tight..get the GTX 460 instead..its a lot cheaper than the GTX 560 but performs the same.

You 'should' be fine with 2gb of ram... just make sure when you are gaming shut down every other window... and just have the game on.

Save up to buy a new mobo/ram. no point of spending $ on more expensive DDR2 ram...when in the near future you are going upgrade anyways to a new mobo/DDR3 ram...

You are gaming at a low resolution ... it should be fine.
