Thre is no point in upgrading graphics anymore.

Thread Starter
It's been at least a year since any successful PC FPS games have been released and at least 4 years since the last game that forced you to upgrade your hardware was released. Now we are in 2011 and in terms of graphics and physics in games, we are stuck in the year 2007. Why? The most sophisticated PC game ever released is, undeniably Crysis. It was released in 2007, and since then, we have not made any serious progress in physics and graphics. (DX11 is hardly progress as barely any games even use it). The reason for this lack of innovation and progress is very simple: We are limited by technology from 2006, that is the Xbox 360 and PS3. Crysis was a breakthrough because it was not limited by consoles. Now we have Crysis 2, and if you were able to run Crysis on medium to high settings, than you have no problem running Crysis 2. But visually, Crysis 2 is a step backwards. Thus, if there are no new games being released with higher and higher system requirements, what's the point of upgrading your graphics all the time?
I am pretty damn sure that a large portion of Nvidia's sales, even today come from people wanting to play Crysis. However, the latest integrated graphics from intel are actually capable of running Crysis at medium. Soon, that revenue source will run dry for Nvidia. Beacuse if you can run the first Crysis at medium and Crysis 2 at max on integrated graphics, than whats the point of buying a GPU anymore? Nvidia has to provide some kind of financial incentive for developers to develop a PC only FPS game, or they will start losing money to consoles. If you bought a decent graphics card two years ago, then you have no reason to upgrade even now. For example, I have a GTS 250 in my system. That GTS 250 is more than capable of running Crysis 2 maxed out. And if the disease of consolitis keeps spreading, then i will have no reason to buy a Graphics card even 5 years from now.

crysis2 + dx11 & highres texture patch?

somewhat I agree with you though, there haven't been any true PC titles since around the time Crysis was released. But this was to be expected since the console market is much more rewarding financially

You clearly dont know anything. No integrated GPU can Max out Crysis 2. Intels HD3000 is slow, your GTS250 is slow with today's standards. You can pick 2 roots with GPUs. Not upgrade and keep lowering the graphics and this can take you 3-4 year or upgrade and keep graphics at Max. Also GTS250 cant Max out Crysis 2.

I don't know. Metro is pretty brutal on my 5870 which would start to make a 7xxx series look pretty attractive thanks to increased tesselation performance plus running (hopefully) cooler and quieter. True mostly what you said though. Some people have upgrade fever and need the very latest and best when the graphical demand clearly isn't that high. I see people with tri SLI 580s and I just think "Ok..... but what do you do that you need that $1500 monstrosity for?!"

I'd have to agree with you. Consoles are destroying everything for PC gamers. Luckily there still are a few companies that make strictly PC games, like blizzard: Starcraft, warcraft, diablo...but they dont have any FPS.

Hopefully some company will step up and not sell out to console companies.
But just to be rational here, theres no way enthusiasts like us will EVER use integrated graphics. Honestly, half of us throw this crap in our system to brag about it later
But i definately feel where you're coming from.
Hopefully this company i speak of will ascend from the heavens and provide us bith a bounty of good games to play...i haven't turned on my PC in three days...BLASFIMY I TELL YOU!

I agree with the OP. This is also why I am running a cheapo AMD setup. There really isn't any need for a $2500 Intel speedster that can go 300 Mph when we are limited to "freeways" (Games) that are limited to driving @ 75 Mph.

Well, this it true, i admit it, but not everyone wants to play a game with no AA and no AF, and some other filters. Here on this forum are many people with hardcore rigs, and they want the best of the best, even they don't want to admit one simple rule. Everytime the producer(cpu, gpu, memory etc.) stands in advantage over the customer, this is how marketing strategy works, if a person buy now a cpu, it's the best for one year, and the other year a new cpu more performant, and more efficient is releasing, same recipe is for the gpu as well.
A example could be from nvidia drivers, they release stupid drivers, making the people believe their graphics cards aren't good enough to perform great in games, even the gpu is a mainstream or a high-end one. And they will say like this "hey we are releasing the new nvidia gpu's the 700 series, and this gpu's are much better than the previous ones" and they release the new gpu and make a great driver to start with it, and when the time passes they start to release crap drivers to make the user again to believe that their gpu is no longer performing like in the first day.
