LOL , well done!
Kudos to the wise poster who thinks his 250GTS can do it all :/
I went from my 250GTS --> 6850 --> 6950 (now unlocked!)
ALL ON THE SAME PC :!! My AMD Ph2 x4 955
Thats how old you are.. C2 is no step backwards... I was blown away with the ultra shaders et al.
Go hop a bit. I still play cs 1.6 .
PC >>> Console ANY GIVEN DAY ..
When was the last time you saw 60 FPS on your console ??? People here play at 120Hz..

Wow I found this thread hilarious... And all the responses already took the words out of my mouth...

Not only gaming, but let me explain CUDA...
Without my GPU's help, HD video conversions for a 1080p movie to my ipad would have taken the length of my movie to convert... ~2 hours and I got an overclocked 6 core...
Now with CUDA and GPU support(or AMD-Stream), it only takes 30 minutes to convert...
And Adobe CS5 supporting CUDA with much more smooth editing...
And I use xilisoft...

You can play consoles all you want, but I prefer a keyboard and mouse especially for FPS as I am sure I would kill a lot of people using an xbox 360 controller (and I know this is debatable)...
Not only that, but have the best graphics, latest technology (DX11 and tessellation) and be able to set my own resolution and AA levels beyond anything close to what consoles can do...
i'll just stick to fighting and sports games with friends on my Playstation 3 and everything else PC FTW...

The witcher 2, crysis 2, shogun 2. More than enough reasons for me to upgrade my gpu ,to make them look gorgeous. And some upcoming games look demanding as well, tho i agree console gaming is kinda killing pc gamin.

I think the problem here is you don't know what you are missing. Go buy, borrow or look over the shoulder of someone using a 560Ti and a nice 1080p monitor then come back and tell us the same thing.
Besides that FPS aren't the only games that push graphics go try some of the high end texture mods or Witcher 2 with decent settings and watch your PC chug. I am almost willing to bet my PC that you can't even run GTA4@ 25fps.

The frostbite 2 engine is going to rock face, and make any single GPU setup cry. The console version of the game is only going to run at a max of 720p and 30fps, which needless to say is terrible. Your 450 is probly more powerful than a 360, but you are still going to be stuck at much lower framrates and detail than high end users. There is no way a console could handle BF3 maxed, and there is no way your card is either.

Quote:
DICE developers confirmed via Twitter that the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions would run at 720p, as opposed to 1080p, which both consoles support. Furthermore, console versions would run at 30 frames per second, which is considered the bare minimum frame rate for first person shooters.Link
Not to mention the ID Tech 5 engine that will be powering RAGE and DOOM 4.

And remember the updated unreal 3 engine demoed at GDC this year that took THREE 580s just to render real time at only 1080P? You know how many people on OCN and beyond run 2560x1600 or have eyfiinity setups? They will need way more power than that. Every tried nVidia 3D vision? Running games at 120Hz, means you have to render every frame twice, theoretically doubling the framrates needed to match 60Hz gaming.

There are plenty of features and processes that will require more GPU power in the future. As other mentioned folding and CAD are other reasons. If you think your 450 if gonna be tearing through games in 5 years, i believe you are sorely mistaken. Think about what hardware we had 5 years ago and think how well they could play today's games. 5 years ago was when the first dual cores started coming out in laptops, now there are dual core PHONES. Heck, my droid incredible has more RAM in it than the computer I had 5 years ago. Yes consoles are terrible, yes they are holding developers back, and yes you do not need a super powerful GPU to RUN todays games; but if you want to max setting out in games like Metro, Crysis, and Witcher 2, you are going to need a high end, multi card setup. I am so excited for the future of PC gaming!!!

I agree with the OP. There's no need to upgrade from current gen hardware to run any current games. My sig rig was available at the beginning of the year, and it can max out any game. Crysis 2 @ 1200p @ DX11 ultra + HD textures = 60-100fps. Metro 2033 @ 1200p @ DX11 max = 50-60fps.

There are no longer games like Crysis 1 which are released, and require hardware that doesnt even exist yet - and its disappointing. Half the fun of the ultra-high end games, like Crysis, was waiting for the next series of GPUs / CPUs to come out, and seeing if you could finally max out said game. Then, even with a new computer from 2010 or this year, you would still boot up Crysis to see how well it ran.

When Crysis 1 came out I was 1 to 2 generations behind: Pentium 4, 2gb ram, 7800GTX SLI. That would be equivalent to a Quad core, 4gb ram, GTX 480 SLI today - that will run any game at max at 1200p.

Agree with poster. Actually angrier @ UE3 games than console games (same graphics across the board, old Pentium D/ 7600gt ran at same graphical detail as current rig). Metro 2033/ S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series continue to make PC Gaming worth it though.

Well done but frankly , I spend too much time swapping out parts and overcloking afresh every month to have a decent stable setup to contribute to FAH ..
I would , honestly , otherwise..
