My asrock motherboard the extreme4 backplate sits very low on my haf 922 and I want to put on a aftermarket cooler. Would I have to cut the case like this guy?

Yes. Otherwise just take it out and install outside of the case

Yeah you'll need to cut it, doesn't look like to big a job though. Dremel and go.

I need to try to not cut too far so I can still attach all the brass studs.

I talked to a rep from coolermaster. They said it is fine if the backplate of the heatsink touches the case. It will not harm it. If it does something I can just blame coolermaster. I will not cut it.

I have a HAF 932 and it's the same deal.

It's really annoying to tell you the truth. Spend good money on a case only to find out that you have to take the mobo out every time you want to swap coolers.

I traded up from NH-D14 to the H100 last night and I almost forgot how much I hate taking everything out of the case just to swap a cooler.

He didn't cut it because it was touching, he cut it so that he could put the cooler on while the mobo is in the case. It's out of sheer convenience that the backplate cutout should be centered on the socket.

I traded up from NH-D14 to the H100 last night and with some cable routing and the likes it took me around 2.5 hours from start to finish.

CPU sockets have been kind of... moving... as of late.

You're going to see them move even more when 2011 comes out. As a case manufacturer I imagine it's hard to match every motherboard. I wouldn't be surprised if we soon had different motherboard trays depending on what chipset/socket you want to use.

don't cut it... it'll be fine without you cutting. i doubt the backplate will even touch the base.

i know that all my cases (p180 mini and p183) do not have cut outs and as someone said above, it's just there for convenience.
